Meru-Style Safari Tent
Classic canvas tent on wooden frame featuring a private viewing deck positioned directly over the lagoon. En-suite bathroom with hot water, hardwood flooring, and mosquito netting throughout. Each tent accommodates up to 2 guests and includes tea/coffee station with solar-powered amenities.
Camp Xakanaxa is accessed via charter aircraft from Maun International Airport, approximately 90 minutes by road to the airstrip followed by a 45-60 minute charter flight to the camp's private airstrip. A 20-30 minute ground transfer completes the journey. Road access is possible but challenging during rainy season (November-March). Charter flights are typically included in all-inclusive packages.
The dry season (May-September) offers the best game viewing as wildlife concentrates around water sources, with cooler temperatures and clear skies. However, Camp Xakanaxa remains excellent year-round due to the permanent Khwai River. Wet season (November-April) brings lush vegetation and exceptional birdwatching. The camp closes for one week in February.
Camp Xakanaxa is located in one of Africa's premier wildlife reserves. Guests regularly sight lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and zebra. The reserve also hosts over 400 bird species, making it exceptional for birdwatching. Wildlife viewing occurs year-round, with seasonal variations in animal behavior and location.
Camp Xakanaxa includes two daily safari activities combining open 4×4 game drives and motorboat excursions on the Khwai River and lagoon channels. Additional activities include guided birdwatching, night game drives (seasonal), and guided bush walks in selected areas. All activities are led by highly knowledgeable guides trained in wildlife behavior and guest safety.
Camp Xakanaxa does not accommodate children under 6 years old. Children 6 and older may participate in game drives and activities under parental supervision. The intimate camp setting with a maximum of 24 guests creates a peaceful environment, though families should confirm specific child policies with the camp before booking.
All meals, local beverages, and premium spirits are included in Camp Xakanaxa's all-inclusive rate. Dining takes place communally around the boma (traditional fire enclosure) in the evenings, fostering shared experiences among guests. The camp accommodates dietary preferences with advance notice. Park entrance fees and all daily safari activities are also included.
Camp Xakanaxa intentionally offers very limited connection with the outside world, reflecting its philosophy of reconnecting guests with nature. Wi-Fi is not available, and cellular coverage is minimal or absent. This allows for a complete digital detox and immersive safari experience.
No, Camp Xakanaxa is located in a malaria-endemic area. Guests should consult with a travel health professional regarding malaria prophylaxis before traveling. The camp provides mosquito netting in all tents and encourages guests to take appropriate precautions, including insect repellent and protective clothing during dawn and dusk.
Camp Xakanaxa maintains a maximum capacity of 24 guests at any time, distributed across 12 Meru-style tents. This limited capacity ensures personalized service, intimate wildlife experiences, and minimal environmental impact, reflecting Botswana's high-yield, low-impact tourism philosophy.
