Camping Dome Tent
Modern 2-person dome tent set up and dismantled daily by porters. Includes sleeping pads and blankets. Positioned for views of the Simien escarpment and alpine grassland. No electricity or heating.
Fly into Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, then take a domestic flight to Gondar (2.5 hours) or drive 12 hours. From Gondar, take a minibus to Debark town (2 hours, 75 birr). From Debark park headquarters, trek to Sankaber Camp (1–2 hours drive plus 4–5 hours trekking), then continue to Chenek Camp (additional 7–8 hours trekking). Alternatively, hire a guide and mule train from Debark to carry camping gear.
October to May is optimal, with November to February offering the best combination of clear skies, stable weather, and comfortable temperatures (daytime 15–20°C). January–February is coldest but driest. March–May brings occasional rain but fewer crowds. Avoid June–September rainy season when afternoon storms are frequent and trails are muddy.
Camping at Chenek costs 10 birr per night, park entrance fee is 90 birr for foreigners, mandatory scout guide is 150 birr per day, optional professional guide is 400 birr total, and cook service ranges from 300–600 birr depending on group size. Mule transport costs 200 birr per mule per day. Total cost for a 3-day trek typically ranges $50–100 USD per person including all services.
Chenek Camp is suitable for children ages 8 and older with proper acclimatization. The high altitude (3,600m) requires 1–2 days of gradual ascent from lower camps to minimize altitude sickness risk. Children should be experienced hikers and comfortable with basic camping conditions (no electricity, cold showers, outdoor toilets). Families should consult with guides about child-specific concerns.
Chenek Camp is renowned for endemic wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. Gelada Baboons (large grass-eating primates with distinctive red chests) are common, especially at dawn and dusk. Walia Ibex (endemic wild goats with curved horns) inhabit rocky escarpment edges. Other species include the endangered Ethiopian wolf, lammergeier eagles (bone-eating vultures with 3-meter wingspans), and various endemic bird species. Wildlife viewing is best during early morning and late afternoon hours.
Main activities include guided day hikes to surrounding peaks like Inayte (4,070m), wildlife observation walks with expert guides, sunrise and sunset viewing from escarpment viewpoints, and preparation for Ras Dejen (4,550m) summit climb. Cultural visits to the traditional village of Geech are available, featuring Amhara highland architecture and local experiences. Photography of endemic species and alpine landscapes is excellent.
Chenek Camp has no WiFi or reliable cell service due to its remote high-altitude location (3,600m) in Simien Mountains National Park. Internet access is available in Debark town and Gondar. Visitors should plan for complete digital disconnection during their stay, which is part of the authentic wilderness experience.
Altitude sickness is the primary health concern at 3,600m elevation. Ascend gradually (spend 1–2 days at lower camps first), drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol on arrival days. Bring altitude sickness medication (consult your doctor). Temperatures drop near freezing at night—pack warm sleeping bags and layers. Insect-borne diseases are minimal at this elevation. Ensure vaccinations for typhoid and hepatitis A before traveling to Ethiopia. Carry comprehensive travel insurance covering evacuation.
Chenek Camp (3,600m) is the most wildlife-rich campsite, especially for Gelada Baboons and Walia Ibex, but has higher foot traffic due to its location on the main trekking route. Gich Camp (3,600m) offers similar elevation and wildlife but is more remote. Sankaber Camp (3,200m) is the most accessible entry point with easier acclimatization but fewer endemic species. Geech Camp (3,600m) provides cultural immersion in a traditional village setting. Choose based on your priority: wildlife (Chenek), remoteness (Gich), accessibility (Sankaber), or culture (Geech).
