Camping Space
Designated tent camping area on Geech plateau with level ground suitable for standard 2-3 person tents. Visitors bring their own tents or arrange rental through park office or tour operator. No indoor structures, electricity, or heating provided.
From Gondar, drive 102 kilometers to Debark town (2.5-3 hours by 4WD vehicle). At the park office in Debark, obtain permits and arrange a mandatory scout, guide, and porter. Trek from Debark to Sankaber Camp (5-6 hours), then continue to Geech Camp (5-6 hours). All travel beyond the park entrance is on foot or muleback only.
The best trekking season is September-February, with October-November offering the most pleasant conditions. Daytime temperatures range from 5-15°C, dropping below freezing at night. Avoid June-August (heavy rains) and February-May (unpredictable weather). Dry season also provides the best visibility for viewing endemic Walia ibex and gelada baboons.
Park entrance is 90 birr for foreigners, plus 10 birr per day for camping (as of 2014; current rates at park office). Additionally, mandatory costs include: Game scout (approximately 150 birr/day), Guide (variable), Cook if hired (variable), and Muleteers (200 birr/day per mule and muleman). Total cost for a 4-5 day trek typically ranges from $150-300 per person depending on group size and services hired.
Geech Camp is best suited for children ages 12 and older with good physical fitness. The high altitude (3,600 meters) requires acclimatization, and the trek involves 5-6 hour daily walks on mountain terrain. Cold nights (below freezing) and basic facilities (cold water, outdoor toilets) are challenging for young children. Younger children should attempt only shorter day hikes from lower camps like Sankaber.
Geech Camp is an excellent location for observing endemic species including the Walia ibex (found nowhere else on Earth), gelada baboons in large herds, and the rare Simien fox. Bird watching is productive, with Afroalpine species and migrant birds visible September-April. The camp sits within a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting these endangered species.
Geech Camp is a basic camping site with designated tent areas, spring water access, cold water showers, and functional toilets. No restaurant, electricity, heating, or hot water is available. Visitors must bring their own tents or rent them in Debark. Food must be arranged through a hired cook or brought from Debark. This is a budget trekking camp, not a lodge.
Yes, a game scout is mandatory and costs approximately 150 birr per day (as of 2014). Most trekkers also hire an official guide through the park office. These staff are arranged at the Debark park office and fees support local employment and park conservation. Guides are essential for wildlife identification and navigation of the trekking circuit.
Geech Camp sits at 3,600 meters elevation where temperatures regularly drop below freezing, particularly from December-February. Night temperatures typically range from -5°C to 0°C (14-32°F). You must bring a cold-rated sleeping bag (rated to -10°C or lower). Layers, a warm hat, and thermal clothing are essential. Hypothermia is a risk if unprepared for mountain cold.
