Volunteers fly into Chileke Airport (BLZ) near Blantyre, Malawi, approximately 60 km from Mulanje. Upon arrival, Habitat for Humanity Malawi staff meet you and provide ground transportation to the hotel base in Mulanje town, a journey of approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours by road. International flights to Malawi typically connect through major African or European hubs.
A typical build day starts with breakfast at the hotel, followed by transport to the construction site. You'll work on home-building projects from morning through mid-afternoon, with breaks for snacks and lunch. Work might include foundation prep, framing, wall construction, or finishing tasks. After returning to the hotel, you'll have free time, dinner, and a team reflection session to discuss the day's work and cultural observations.
No, construction experience is not required. Habitat for Humanity trains all volunteers on-site and provides supervision throughout the build. Tasks are designed to be accessible to people of all skill levels, and experienced staff guide volunteers through safe and effective building practices.
The best time to volunteer in Mulanje is during the dry season from May to September, when weather is predictable and construction sites are most accessible. Temperatures range from 15-25°C (59-77°F). The rainy season (November to March) can affect construction schedules and road access, though programs may operate year-round.
Global Village program fees vary depending on group size and specific arrangements but typically cover accommodation in Mulanje, all meals, in-country transfers, and Habitat staff support for the week. International flights are arranged separately by volunteers. Contact Lisa Amor at lamor@habitatebsv.org or (408) 273-7196 for current pricing and payment options.
Global Village programs can accommodate families with children, though physical demands and construction site safety considerations apply. Children should be old enough to follow safety instructions and participate meaningfully in appropriate build tasks. Contact Habitat staff to discuss age recommendations and how to adapt the experience for your family.
Mulanje is located within the Mount Mulanje Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-designated site known for exceptional biodiversity and the critically endangered Mulanje cedar (Malawi's national tree). The region features high cloud forests, rainforest gorges, and dry woodlands. Visitors may observe various bird species and forest fauna, though the primary focus of Global Village is community development rather than safari activities. Sapitwa Peak, the highest point at 3,002 meters, offers hiking opportunities.
Pack sturdy work clothes and shoes for construction (long pants, closed-toe boots), sun protection (hat, sunscreen), insect repellent, and a light jacket for cooler evenings. Bring personal medications, toiletries, and a headlamp or flashlight. Casual clothes for evenings and community meals are essential. Check current health requirements (vaccinations) and travel insurance needs before departure.
Standard travel health precautions apply: consult a travel medicine provider about malaria prophylaxis and recommended vaccinations (yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A/B). Construction sites require safety awareness and adherence to guidelines provided by Habitat staff. Travel insurance is recommended. Mulanje is generally safe for travelers; exercise standard precautions as you would in any international destination.
