Little Makalolo is reached via charter flight or road transfer from Victoria Falls. The recommended route is a 90-minute charter flight from Victoria Falls International Airport, which lands directly at the camp's airstrip, followed by a short transfer to the lodge. Alternatively, a 5-hour road transfer from Victoria Falls is available on request. Both transfers can be arranged through the camp or your safari operator.
June through October is the peak safari season at Little Makalolo, when the dry winter months concentrate wildlife around the camp's waterhole, guaranteeing excellent elephant and Big Five sightings. Daytime temperatures are mild (15–25°C) and malaria risk is lowest. November through May offers lush green scenery and lower rates, but wildlife disperses across the park. December–January brings premium pricing due to holiday season demand.
Rates at Little Makalolo range from approximately US$715–US$1,390 per person per night sharing, depending on season. January 1–5 rates are US$715/pppn; June–October peak season is US$1,390/pppn; and shoulder seasons (January 6–March and November–December) range US$846–US$865/pppn. Rates are all-inclusive of meals, game drives, and most activities. Exact pricing and special offers should be confirmed directly with the camp or through verified safari operators.
Yes, Little Makalolo welcomes families with children ages 8 and older. The camp offers a two-bedroom family suite with separate twin and double bedrooms, suitable meal options for younger guests, and professional guides who adapt safari activities for children's safety and enjoyment. Malaria precautions are necessary in the region, and families should consult health advisors before travel. Children under 8 may be accommodated with prior arrangement.
Little Makalolo is located in one of Hwange National Park's most productive game-viewing areas, home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. The camp's waterhole is a major draw for elephant herds, which can number in the hundreds during the dry season, plus buffalo, zebra, impala, and other plains game. Nocturnal species including leopard, porcupine, and aardvark are regularly sighted on night drives. Over 400 bird species inhabit the park, including African fish eagles and saddle-billed storks.
Activities at Little Makalolo include twice-daily guided game drives on the private 50,000-acre concession, guided bush walks led by professional guides, night drives for nocturnal wildlife viewing, and access to a private game-viewing hide overlooking the waterhole. Birdwatching, cultural and village visits, and sleep-out under stars experiences are also available. All game drives and most activities are included in the nightly rate.
Little Makalolo does not have WiFi or reliable cell service, reflecting its remote location in the heart of Hwange National Park. This is intentional, allowing guests to fully disconnect and immerse themselves in the safari experience. Communication with the outside world is available through the camp's radio systems in case of emergency.
Malaria is present in Hwange National Park, and travelers should consult health professionals about antimalarial prophylaxis. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended. The camp is remote, though professional guides and communication systems are in place for emergencies. Insect repellent, sunscreen, and light, breathable clothing are essential. Consult your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel regarding vaccinations and health precautions specific to Zimbabwe.
Little Makalolo distinguishes itself as an intimate, ultra-exclusive camp with just six tented suites (12 guests maximum) on a private 50,000-acre concession, ensuring unshared game drives and exclusive wildlife viewing. Operated by award-winning Wilderness Safaris, it combines luxury accommodation with authentic bush atmosphere. Many larger Hwange lodges accommodate 20–40+ guests with shared game drives and less exclusivity. Little Makalolo's premium positioning and small size make it ideal for travelers prioritizing privacy and personalized service over budget considerations.
