Mkulumadzi Lodge is 90 kilometers south of Blantyre, approximately 1.5 hours by vehicle from the city. International travelers fly into Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, then either take a 40-minute charter flight to Majete's dedicated airstrip (with included lodge transfer) or drive 4–5 hours via sealed road to Nchalo, then gravel road into the reserve. Road access is possible year-round; 4×4 vehicles are recommended during wet months (November–March).
The dry season from June to September offers peak wildlife viewing, with comfortable temperatures and concentrated animal populations at water sources like the Shire River. July–September is optimal for photography and Big Five encounters. Rates are highest during this period ($540 PPPN in 2026). Shoulder seasons (May–June, October) provide balanced conditions at moderate rates ($430–$445 PPPN). The wet season (November–March) features lush vegetation and migratory birds but less predictable wildlife sightings.
Mkulumadzi is located in Malawi's only Big Five reserve, so lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and buffalo are present. Regularly sighted species include elephant, sable antelope, nyala, eland, bushbuck, kudu, Lichtensteins hartebeest, waterbuck, impala, suni, grysbok, klipspringer, baboon, vervet monkey, hyena, serval, genet, and civet. The reserve has successfully reintroduced approximately 3,000 animals across 17 species since 2003.
All rates include twice-daily game drives (morning and afternoon/evening), guided walking safaris, all meals, bar service with selected beverages, laundry, and airport/airstrip transfers. Additional activities available at extra cost include night drives, boating on the Shire River, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, hot-air ballooning, and cultural village visits.
Yes, children of all ages are welcome at Mkulumadzi Lodge, with discounted children's rates available. The lodge offers a variety of family-friendly activities both in-camp and in the reserve. Children can participate in game drives and guided walks appropriate to their age and experience level.
Yes, all rooms feature wireless internet access, coffeemakers, refrigerators, and en-suite bathrooms with hot water. The lodge has an outdoor swimming pool, full bar service, and restaurant facilities. Generator backup ensures 24-hour power availability. However, the lodge prioritizes the safari experience, so connectivity may be intermittent during remote game drives.
Rates for 2025–2026 range from $385 to $630 USD per person per night, depending on season. Low season (January–May 21, November–December) starts at $385–$395 PPPN. Shoulder season (May 22–June, October) is $430–$445 PPPN. High season (July–September) peaks at $540 PPPN. All rates are fully inclusive of meals, bar, laundry, and twice-daily game viewing activities.
Mkulumadzi operates on an American Plan (all-inclusive). Rates include all meals, selected bar beverages, laundry service, twice-daily game drives or walking safaris, airport/airstrip transfers, and a meet-and-greet at Lilongwe Airport. Premium experiences like hot-air ballooning and premium spirits are available at additional cost.
Yes, Mkulumadzi operates within Majete Wildlife Reserve's African Parks management framework, which has successfully reintroduced 3,000 animals across 17 species since 2003—one of Africa's most successful large-scale restoration initiatives. The lodge's private concession model ensures revenue directly supports reserve operations, community development, and wildlife recovery programs for endangered species like wild dogs and black rhinos.
