Mugara Hot Springs

Mugara Hot Springs is a natural geothermal thermal water site located in Rumonge commune in southwestern Burundi. Two fractured stones continuously spew hot water that cascades into a bathing pool at the foot of Mugara hill, eventually flowing into Lake Tanganyika. The site is surrounded by native vegetation including a large indigenous tree called 'Umuhona'.

Mugara Hot Springs is located approximately 50-60 kilometers south of Bujumbura, Burundi's capital city. The journey by private vehicle typically takes 1-2 hours traveling south along the lakeshore road toward Rumonge port.

Mugara Hot Springs is accessible year-round. The dry season from June to September offers the most comfortable visiting conditions with lower rainfall. The thermal water temperature remains consistently hot throughout the year due to its geothermal origin, making winter months ideal when cooler daytime temperatures provide pleasant contrast with the heated pools.

Mugara Hot Springs charges modest entrance fees payable at the site. Between 2019 and 2023, the site generated 154 million Burundian Francs in total tourism revenue. Local residents receive free access during nighttime hours, while daytime visitors and tourists pay daily entry fees. Most visitors book visits through Bujumbura-based safari operators who include the site in multi-day tour packages.
