Sona Hotel

Sona Hotel is located in Simien Mountains National Park, Amhara Region, Ethiopia, approximately 120 kilometers northeast of Gondar. The hotel sits on a major trekking route connecting Sankaber, Gech, Chenek, and Ambiko, making it accessible to both independent trekkers and organized tour groups within the UNESCO World Heritage site.

From Gondar, the drive to Sona Hotel takes approximately 4-5 hours by road, including 1-2 hours of mountain roads after reaching the Debarak park entrance. Alternatively, trekkers typically reach Sona Hotel on days 7-8 of multi-day expeditions departing from Sankaber Campsite. Gondar International Airport is the nearest major airport, approximately 120 kilometers south, with connections to Addis Ababa.

The best time to visit Sona Hotel is October through May. October-November offers lush green landscapes with clear mountain views. December-February provides the driest weather and excellent visibility, though nights are cold. March-May brings warming temperatures and wildflowers. June-September is the rainy season and is not recommended for trekking due to slippery terrain and limited visibility.

Sona Hotel can accommodate families, though it is best suited for children aged 10 and older due to the high altitude (ranging from 1,500 to 4,550 meters) and physical demands of mountain trekking in the park. Children should have prior hiking experience, and all visitors should acclimatize for 2-3 days at lower elevations before ascending. Consult with tour operators about age-appropriate activities and altitude safety.

Simien Mountains National Park is home to three endemic species found nowhere else: the Walia Ibex (critically endangered wild goat), the Ethiopian Wolf (Africa's rarest carnivore), and the Gelada Baboon with its distinctive chest patch. Visitors may also observe various bird species and smaller mammals. Wildlife viewing is best during early morning and late afternoon bush walks led by experienced guides.
