Tsowa Safari Island is accessible via a 20–40 minute road transfer from Victoria Falls Town or Airport (28–47 km, costing $42–$52 USD) to the Lower Zambezi National Park entrance, followed by a boat transfer to the island. The camp arranges all transfers as part of the booking package. International guests typically arrive at Victoria Falls Airport and are collected by Tsowa's vehicle fleet.
May through August (dry season) offers the coolest temperatures and highest wildlife concentrations, making it ideal for game drives and photography. September–November brings spring conditions, wildflower blooms, and bird migrations. December–April is the wet season with lush vegetation, lower tourist numbers, and excellent fishing and canoeing conditions. Most international visitors book May–September; your choice depends on preferred activities and climate tolerance.
Room rates include accommodation, all meals (brunch, high tea, dinner), house wines and sparkling wines, local beers, non-premium spirits, bottled water, soft drinks, tea and coffee service, laundry service, and transfers via open 4x4 game viewer vehicle plus boat transfer to the island. Guests can select up to 2 additional activities daily from game drives, bush walks, canoeing, and sunset cruises. A $10 USD per-night Isibindi Foundation Levy is charged to guests 13+ years. Premium alcohol, park entrance fees, and Victoria Falls excursions (available for 3+ night stays) cost extra.
Tsowa Safari Island can accommodate families, with flexibility to adjust activities based on children's ages and interests. The island setting and boat transfers require reasonable mobility. The camp offers flexible activity scheduling, allowing families to customize their days. Advance communication with the camp regarding children's ages and preferences is recommended to ensure a suitable experience. The intimate camp size (limited tents) makes it well-suited to small family groups rather than large families.
Lower Zambezi National Park supports all Big Five species (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros), though rhinoceros sightings are rare. Common sightings include elephant herds, buffalo, African wild dog, hippo, crocodile, various antelope species, and over 400 bird species. River-based activities (canoeing, sunset cruises) provide water-level views of aquatic life and wading birds. Game drive success varies seasonally; dry season (May–August) offers highest predictability. Professional guides maximize wildlife encounter probability through expert tracking and positioning.
Tsowa specializes in river-based and land-based safari activities: twice-daily guided game drives in Lower Zambezi National Park, guided bush walks exploring island ecology, canoeing expeditions on the Zambezi River, sunset cruises combining wildlife viewing with photography, and fishing for bream and tiger fish (basic equipment provided; fly-fishing equipment not available). Guests staying 3+ nights receive a full-day return trip to Victoria Falls with private guide and entrance fees included. All activities are led by trained, experienced guides.
Tsowa Safari Island does not offer Wi-Fi. Cell phone coverage is limited and unreliable on the island due to remote location. The camp intentionally maintains a technology-free environment to enhance the authentic safari experience. Guests seeking connectivity should inform the camp in advance; arrangements for emergency communication can be discussed. Most visitors appreciate the digital detox aspect of the island experience.
Tsowa Safari Island is located in a malaria-endemic zone; antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult your physician 4–6 weeks before travel. Mosquito nets are provided in all tents; insect repellent is essential. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for Zimbabwe entry (check current requirements with your government health authority). The camp maintains generator backup power and basic medical supplies; serious medical emergencies require evacuation to Victoria Falls or Livingstone. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is highly advisable. The Zambezi River presents crocodile and hippo hazards; guides enforce strict safety protocols during water activities.
Tsowa Safari Island is one of few island-based camps in Lower Zambezi, offering a distinctive river-focused experience versus traditional lodge-based safaris. The all-inclusive rate structure (meals, activities, transfers) simplifies budgeting compared to à la carte alternatives. The Isibindi Foundation partnership provides transparent community benefit. Tsowa's intimate size (limited tent capacity) creates exclusivity but lower availability. Compared to larger Zambezi Valley lodges, Tsowa emphasizes canoeing, fishing, and river ecology alongside traditional game drives, appealing to adventure-oriented travelers rather than purely comfort-focused visitors.
