Standard Banda
Spacious suite featuring bright local fabrics, comfortable furnishings, and en-suite bathroom. Half of the property's 10 bandas overlook Lake Burera; the other half face the jagged volcanic peaks. All include heating for cool mountain nights and private access to lodge gardens and terraces.
Deluxe Banda
Premium suite with dedicated living room and private fire pit for evening relaxation. Maintains the same bright local fabric aesthetic and mountain positioning as Standard Bandas, with enhanced space and amenities for couples or small families seeking extended stays.
Virunga Lodge is a 2.5–3 hour ground transfer from Kigali International Airport via scenic highland routes passing terraced farmland and Lake Kivu views. The lodge arranges airport transfers as part of its service. The property sits in the Burera District near the Kinigi park headquarters, approximately 15 kilometers from Volcanoes National Park's main entrance.
The best times are the dry seasons: June–August and December–February, when gorilla permits are most readily available and mountain trails are less muddy. High season (June–September and mid-December–February) commands premium rates; low season (October–November and March–May) offers 40–45% discounts and fewer tourists, though rain increases on trekking routes.
Mountain gorilla permits cost $1,500 USD per person (2024 rates) and are typically arranged by the lodge. Permit fees are separate from accommodation rates. The lodge handles all permit coordination and trekking logistics with the park authorities.
Virunga Lodge welcomes families, but the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 12 years due to the physical demands and duration of treks (2–8 hours). Children under 5 stay free when sharing a parent's room; children ages 5–12 occupying their own room pay adult rates. Younger children can enjoy nature walks and golden monkey watching, which require less hiking intensity.
In addition to mountain gorilla trekking, guests can participate in golden monkey watching, hikes on volcanic trails including Mount Bisoke and Mount Sabyinyo, guided nature walks, birdwatching for Rwandan endemics, and visits to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund for behind-the-scenes gorilla research education. All activities are arranged through the lodge.
All rates are fully inclusive of meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), soft drinks, standard and premium alcoholic beverages, signature cocktails, cellar collection wines (excluding French champagne), single malt whiskeys, and daily massage service. The lodge serves international cuisine alongside traditional Rwandan dishes such as brochettes, isombe, and ugali. Dietary restrictions are accommodated with advance notice.
Wi-Fi availability is not confirmed at Virunga Lodge. Cellular coverage in the Volcanoes National Park area can be limited due to the remote highland location. Guests should plan for limited connectivity and inform work contacts of potential communication delays during their stay.
Standard bookings (up to 3 rooms) require full payment of gorilla and chimpanzee permits plus 20% of the remaining invoice upon receipt. The deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. Final balance is due 45 days prior to arrival. Group bookings (4+ rooms) require 35% of the remaining invoice upfront. Bookings within 45 days of arrival require full payment upon invoice receipt.
Virunga Lodge operates under the Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust, directing $50 USD per guest per night toward community development and gorilla habitat protection initiatives. The lodge partners with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, enabling guest participation in research campus tours. All staff are locally employed Rwandan citizens trained in hospitality and conservation awareness, ensuring direct economic benefit to surrounding villages.
