Luxury Canvas Suite
Spacious 45-square-meter canvas-tented suite on elevated boardwalk with king or twin bed configuration. Features en-suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor shower, private veranda with views of Lake Rwanyakazinga or surrounding savannah, and natural wood and canvas furnishings throughout. Solar-powered electricity, hot water, and mosquito netting standard.
Wilderness Magashi is accessible via charter flight from Kigali International Airport to Akagera's northern airstrip (approximately 2 hours), followed by a 30–45 minute game drive transfer to camp. Alternatively, ground transfer from Kigali takes 5–6 hours by vehicle. Most guests combine Magashi with gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park, in which case the flight from Volcanoes airstrip is only 1.5 hours.
The optimal visiting window is November through April, coinciding with Akagera's dry season and offering excellent wildlife viewing with minimal rainfall. January–February provides the driest conditions and highest wildlife concentration. November–December and March–April are excellent shoulder seasons with lower tourist traffic and reduced prices. Wildlife viewing remains productive year-round due to the park's diverse water sources.
Wilderness Magashi offers Big Five viewing: lion (reintroduced 2015), leopard, African elephant, Cape buffalo, and Eastern black rhino (reintroduced 2017). Additional megafauna include Masai giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, and impala. Lake Rwanyakazinga hosts one of Africa's highest hippo densities alongside large Nile crocodiles. The wetlands conceal the secretive sitatunga antelope and the rare shoebill stork. Over 520 bird species are recorded in Akagera, making it a premier birding destination.
Nightly rates range from USD 964 (March–April) to USD 1,397 (June–October and December–February), per person, fully inclusive of accommodation, all meals, twice-daily game drives, laundry, and local beverages. A mandatory conservation levy of USD 150 per person per day is added separately. Rates are lower during the green season (May–October) and higher during peak dry season (December–February).
Yes, Wilderness Magashi welcomes families, though children must be at least 6 years old to participate in game drives. The camp offers reduced rates for children under 12. The intimate setting and wildlife viewing from private verandas provide unique educational opportunities for young travelers. However, the remote location and limited amenities (no Wi-Fi, no kids' club) make it better suited to families comfortable with traditional safari experiences.
All-inclusive activities include twice-daily game drives (early morning and late afternoon, 3–4 hours each), guided nature walks through the concession, boat excursions on Lake Rwanyakazinga for hippo and bird viewing, night drives (seasonal), catch-and-release fishing, and cultural visits to neighboring communities including traditional ceremonies. Sundowner drinks and lakeside picnics are also available.
Wilderness Magashi does not offer Wi-Fi or reliable mobile signal, by design. The camp prioritizes an immersive wilderness experience free from digital distractions. However, emergency communication is available through the camp's radio system. Guests seeking connectivity should arrange this with the camp in advance of arrival.
Malaria is endemic to Akagera, so antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult your physician at least 4–6 weeks before travel. Ensure routine vaccinations are current (yellow fever vaccination is not required for Rwanda but recommended for travelers from other African countries). The camp maintains first-aid facilities and can coordinate emergency evacuation via helicopter if necessary. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly advised.
Wilderness Magashi is the only luxury camp in Akagera's northern sector and operates the only private concession in the park (4,200 hectares). This exclusivity provides superior wildlife viewing with minimal tourist interference compared to Akagera's southern lodges (Ruzizi Tented Lodge, Mantis Akagera Game Lodge). Magashi's premium positioning reflects its intimate setting, expert guiding, and full-board inclusive pricing. It is ideal for travelers seeking a high-end safari experience combined with gorilla trekking.
Yes, Wilderness Magashi is specifically positioned as the ideal safari complement to gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park. Most guests spend 3–4 days gorilla trekking at Volcanoes, then 3–4 days at Magashi for Big Five safari. Charter flights between the two parks (1.5 hours) allow seamless combination. This itinerary offers Rwanda's complete wildlife portfolio: mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and Big Five game—all in one trip.
