The dry season from April to October is ideal for visiting. During this period, vegetation is sparse, making wildlife easier to spot, and roads are in better condition. The bush is open and dry, concentrating animals around water sources. Temperatures remain high year-round, but the dry season offers the most comfortable conditions for game viewing.
Lengwe National Park is the closest, located just 40 miles (64km) southwest, requiring approximately 1 hour's drive. Liwonde National Park is 120km away, about 2.5 hours' drive. Both parks are easily accessible from Blantyre as a day trip or short safari destination.
The parks near Blantyre are home to diverse wildlife including the rare Nyala antelope, African elephants, black rhinos, lions, cheetahs, leopards, buffalo, and numerous antelope species. Over 400 bird species have been recorded. Success depends on the season and park; the dry season offers better visibility and wildlife concentration.
Four-wheel-drive vehicles are highly recommended, especially during the wet season (November-March) when roads deteriorate significantly. During the dry season, standard vehicles may be acceptable on main routes, but 4x4s provide better access to remote areas and game viewing locations. Private charter flights are also available as an alternative.
Options range from luxury safari lodges like Nyala Lodge at Lengwe to eco-camps and budget guesthouses in Blantyre. Chimwala Camp offers overnight stays with guided walks. Accommodation can be booked directly through park management or via tour operators in Blantyre, with prices varying from budget to luxury levels.
