Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria has no single lake-wide entry fee, but boat cruises in Uganda commonly cost about $50-$200 per person. A private Lake Victoria safari package averages about $250 per person per day, depending on accommodation, transport, meals, boat activities and conservation visits.

The best time to visit Lake Victoria is June to September and December to February because drier weather supports boat trips and island excursions. March to May and October to November are wetter, quieter and sometimes less expensive, but rain can affect lake activities.

Visitors can see chimpanzees at Ngamba Island Sanctuary, plus hippopotamuses, Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, egrets and other wetland birds. Lake Victoria is not a Big Five safari destination, so travelers seeking lions, elephants and buffalo should add a Ugandan national park.

Most visitors fly to Entebbe International Airport (EBB), which is about 5 km from central Entebbe and nearby lakeshore access points. Entebbe is about 45 km from Kampala by road, and private vehicles, taxis, boat transfers and regional charter flights can connect travelers with islands and other lakeside sites.

Lake Victoria can suit families when they choose calm, supervised boat trips and child-friendly lakeside accommodation. Children should wear life jackets, stay with adults near the water and follow sanctuary age rules, which vary by operator and chimpanzee-visit program.

Three days is a practical Lake Victoria itinerary. One day allows an Entebbe waterfront visit, two days add a boat trip and island excursion, and longer stays can include fishing, Ngamba Island and a connection to Uganda's national parks.
