The dry season (May-September) is optimal for wildlife viewing, with June-August offering peak Big Five sightings as animals concentrate around water sources. Temperatures are cooler (15-20°C), and sparse vegetation makes spotting easier. December-February brings lush greenery and migratory birds but reduced predator visibility. Shoulder months (April, October-November) offer fewer crowds and moderate wildlife viewing with comfortable temperatures (20-25°C). The central grasslands remain productive year-round, but dry season is most reliable for consistent lion and leopard encounters.

The central Kruger grasslands accessed from Orpen Gate host all Big Five species: lion (highest population density in the park), leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino. You'll also see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, cheetah, hyena, and endangered African wild dog. Over 500 bird species inhabit the area, including African fish eagle and African hawk-eagle. The Timbavati Road is famous for white lions, and the Mphongolo Loop regularly yields lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo sightings.

Fly into Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit (70 km away, 1-hour drive via R40 road) or Kruger Mpumalanga Airport (40 km away). From Johannesburg (5-6 hours), drive via N1 north and R40 east.
