Phinda Private Game Reserve

Phinda is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo), as well as cheetahs, African wild dogs, and rare black rhinos. The reserve supports over 400 bird species and diverse reptile populations. With seven distinct ecosystems and high carrying capacity for large mammals, wildlife viewing opportunities are excellent year-round. Guided game drives and bush walks significantly increase sighting chances.

Most visitors fly into OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, then take a connecting domestic flight to Richards Bay Airport (1.5 hours). From Richards Bay, it's approximately 90 kilometers (90 minutes drive) to Phinda. Many lodges arrange airport transfers as part of package deals. Alternatively, you can fly to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. The reserve is accessible via road from neighboring Mkuze Game Reserve and iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

A minimum of 3 days is recommended to fully experience Phinda Private Game Reserve. This allows for multiple game drives, bush walks, and cultural activities. Many visitors extend their stay to 4-5 days to explore different ecosystems within the reserve and visit nearby attractions like the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Zulu cultural villages. Longer stays provide better opportunities for wildlife photography and wildlife encounters.
