About Hell's Gate National Park

Hell's Gate National Park is a small but spectacular national park located near Lake Naivasha in Kenya's Rift Valley. Unlike most Kenyan parks, Hell's Gate is not primarily known as a wildlife-watching destination, but rather for its dramatic scenery and unique recreational opportunities. The park's name refers to a steep-sided valley with impressive red-ochre cliffs that appear to glow like fire during sunrise and sunset. The landscape is dominated by dormant volcanoes and ancient lava plugs, including the iconic Fischer's Tower, which rises prominently from the valley floor. The park features geothermal power plants and the Olkaria geothermal hot spa, adding to its unique character. What sets Hell's Gate apart from other Kenyan parks is that visitors can actually leave their vehicles and explore on foot or by bicycle, making it one of the few parks where such activities are permitted. The park offers excellent opportunities for hiking through Lower Gorge, rock climbing at Fischer's Tower, mountain biking, and cycling through the scenic landscape. The wildlife, while not the main attraction, includes buffalo, giraffe, zebra, eland, Coke's hartebeest, Thomson's gazelle, and impala as common grazers. Olive baboons are frequently seen perched on the cliffs, and visitors might spot klipspringers, Chanler's mountain reedbuck, Kirk's dik-dik, steenbok, serval, and occasionally spotted hyena and black-backed jackal at dusk. The park is accessible year-round, though wildlife viewing is best during the dry season from June to October when grass is shorter and animals are easier to spot. The wet season from November to May transforms the landscape into lush green vegetation and attracts nesting birds of prey, offering spectacular scenery despite occasional afternoon showers.
