Central Kalahari Game Reserve

While high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles are strongly recommended, particularly during rainy seasons, standard vehicles may access main routes during dry seasons. However, exploring remote areas and secondary roads requires four-wheel-drive. Many visitors opt for organized safari tours with properly equipped vehicles and experienced guides rather than self-driving.

The reserve is renowned for African wild dog viewing, with ongoing research projects enhancing opportunities to observe these endangered animals. Predator viewing includes lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The dry season (May-September) offers superior game viewing when animals concentrate around remaining water sources, making wildlife encounters more frequent and predictable.

Facilities are minimal and basic. The reserve has established campsites and a few lodges, but services such as fuel, food supplies, and medical facilities are extremely limited. Visitors must be self-sufficient, bringing adequate fuel, water, food, and supplies. Planning ahead and contacting the Department of Wildlife and National Parks in advance is essential for logistical arrangements.

The wet season from November to March brings migratory bird species to the reserve, making it ideal for birdwatchers. Species diversity increases significantly during this period. However, the dry season also offers excellent birdwatching opportunities with resident species being more visible around water sources. Early morning and late afternoon drives yield the best results.

Central Kalahari is one of Africa's most remote reserves, with vast stretches of wilderness and minimal human infrastructure. Visitors should prepare for extreme isolation, limited communication networks, basic facilities, and complete self-sufficiency.
