The zebra and wildebeest migration occurs primarily from November to May during the rainy season when water fills the pans. This is Southern Africa's largest remaining migration. The peak viewing period is typically January to March when herds are most concentrated. However, the dry season (June-October) offers excellent wildlife viewing with animals concentrated around remaining water sources.
Yes, a 4x4 vehicle is essential, especially during the wet season (November-May) when roads become muddy and challenging. Even during the dry season, the terrain is rough and remote. Most visitors either join guided safari tours with operators from Maun or hire a 4x4 with an experienced driver. Self-driving is possible for experienced travelers during the dry season with proper navigation equipment.
The park can be explored via self-drive during the dry season (June-October) if you have a 4x4 vehicle, navigation equipment, and experience with remote travel. However, the landscape is vast and featureless, making navigation difficult. Many visitors prefer guided safaris with professional guides who know wildlife locations and can provide expert commentary. Self-driving in the wet season is not recommended due to road conditions.
Makgadikgadi Pans supports diverse wildlife including lions, cheetahs, hyenas, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, and meerkats. During wet season months (November-May), water birds and migratory species are abundant. The park is particularly famous for its massive zebra and wildebeest herds. Predator viewing is excellent, especially during the dry season when animals concentrate around water sources. Elephant sightings are possible but less frequent.
Nxai Pan National Park is located north of Makgadikgadi Pans and features more vegetation and woodland habitat. Makgadikgadi Pans is characterized by vast, open salt pan landscapes with minimal vegetation. Nxai Pan is better for year-round game viewing, while Makgadikgadi is spectacular during migrations and offers more dramatic, surreal scenery. Many visitors combine both parks in a single trip as they are adjacent and complementary ecosystems.
