Tarangire campsite provides designated ground camping plots only. No tents, bedding, structures, electricity, water, or food services are provided. Visitors must bring complete camping equipment including tent, sleeping bag, and all provisions.
Tarangire is located 120 kilometers southeast of Arusha. Road access takes 2.5-3 hours via the B2 highway. Charter flights from Arusha Airport (ARK) are available; park entry requires a private 4WD vehicle for game drives and transportation.
The dry season from June to November offers peak wildlife viewing, with elephant concentrations exceeding 2,000 animals at the Tarangire River. July-October provides the best combination of dry conditions, cool temperatures, and maximum animal sightings.
Tarangire hosts Tanzania's highest elephant concentration (2,000+ seasonal), plus all Big Five species including lions, buffalo, leopards, and rhinoceros. The park also contains giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and over 500 bird species including Kori bustards and raptors.
Tarangire camping is not recommended for families with young children. The facility provides no amenities, no meals, no water services, and requires complete self-sufficiency and camping experience. Minimal safety infrastructure exists for child supervision in a wildlife area.
Yes, a private 4WD vehicle is essential for game drives and accessing the park's interior. Walking safaris are restricted to designated areas with mandatory ranger escort. Vehicle hire services are available in Arusha for approximately $150-250 USD per day.
Park entry fees are $50-80 USD per person per day for non-resident foreign visitors. Vehicle fees are approximately $30-40 USD per day. Camping is included in park fees; no additional accommodation charges apply. Ranger guide fees are separate.
No food, water, or dining services are provided. The campsite is entirely self-catering. All food, drinking water, and cooking equipment must be brought from Arusha or regional provisioning sources. Water should not be assumed available; visitors must carry sufficient potable water.
Essential items include: tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cooking stove and fuel, all food and potable water, first aid kit, sun protection, insect repellent, warm clothing for cool mornings (15°C), binoculars for wildlife viewing, and torch/headlamp. Camping experience and self-sufficiency skills are mandatory.
