Horombo Hut is a mountain rest facility located at 3,704 meters elevation on the Marangu Route of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It serves as the critical two-night acclimatization stop between Mandara Hut (day one) and Kibo Hut (day three/four) on the six-day trekking route to Africa's highest peak.
Horombo Hut is reached on foot by trekking 10.4 kilometers from Mandara Hut, typically taking 5-7 hours of hiking through alpine forest and moorland terrain. You arrive on the afternoon of day two of the Marangu Route trek. Access begins from the Marangu Gate, approximately 40 kilometers from Moshi City (1.5 hours by vehicle).
Horombo Hut provides 120 bunk beds in communal dormitory-style huts. Each bunk includes a provided mattress and pillow, but you must bring your own sleeping bag rated for temperatures between -5°C and 5°C. No private rooms are available; all accommodation is shared with other trekkers.
Communal dining halls serve hearty, carbohydrate-rich meals designed for high-altitude trekking, including porridge, rice, beans, vegetables, and occasional meat. Hot tea, coffee, and water are available throughout the day. Meals are served on a set schedule coordinated with trekking groups. Dietary restrictions should be communicated to your trekking operator in advance.
The best trekking seasons are January to February (short dry season) and June to October (long dry season), offering clear skies, stable weather, and highest summit success rates. Shoulder seasons (March, April, November) provide fewer crowds with adequate conditions. The rainy seasons (April-May, November-December) bring mud and slippery paths, making acclimatization more challenging.
You spend two nights at Horombo Hut on the standard six-day Marangu Route. Day two involves hiking from Mandara Hut to Horombo in the afternoon. Day three is a scheduled rest and acclimatization day, allowing your body to adjust to the 3,704-meter elevation before the final push to Kibo Hut and the summit.
Wildlife at Horombo Hut (3,704m elevation) is limited to alpine species including alpine hyraxes, rock hyraxes, and endemic alpine birds such as the scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird. The primary focus at this altitude is acclimatization rather than wildlife viewing. The hut sits above the forest zone in the alpine moorland ecosystem.
During your scheduled rest day at Horombo Hut, you can take short altitude adjustment walks (typically 1-2 hours) to nearby viewpoints, rest and hydrate to aid acclimatization, and share experiences with fellow trekkers. The focus is on preparing your body for the final ascent to Kibo Hut and the summit push.
Horombo Hut is not recommended for children under 10 years old due to the high altitude (3,704m), basic dormitory conditions, and the physical demands of trekking to this elevation. Children who do trek should be experienced hikers, well-acclimatized, and accompanied by experienced guides familiar with pediatric altitude management.
