October to April offers the best trekking conditions with clear skies, stable weather, and daytime temperatures of 15–20°C. September is excellent for wildflower blooms and exceptional visibility. Avoid July and August—they receive over half the year's rainfall, making trails muddy and challenging. Peak visitor season runs September–November; December–March offers fewer crowds while maintaining ideal hiking weather. Wildlife can be spotted year-round.

The park is home to the world's rarest canid, the Ethiopian wolf (only ~400 remain), the endangered Walia ibex found nowhere else on Earth, and gelada monkeys in herds of hundreds with distinctive scarlet-chested markings. Birdwatchers spot six endemic species including the striking thick-billed raven and Ankober serin. You may also encounter Anubis and hamadryas baboons, golden jackals, klipspringer antelope, and over 50 bird species total. Fly into Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (800 km away) or Gondar International Airport (100 km away).
