Canada Embassy in Tanzania: Help for Canadians 2026

Last checked October 2026. Always confirm with official sources before travelling. This is general information, not legal advice. Consular and entry requirements can change.

Quick answer: where is the Canadian embassy in Tanzania?

Canada's diplomatic mission in Tanzania is the Tanzania safari packages High Commission of Canada in Dar es Salaam, at 26 Garden Avenue/38 Mirambo Street. Its listed telephone numbers are +255 (22) 216-3300 and +255 (22) 211-2835, and its consular email is DSLAM-Consular-Consulaire@international.gc.ca.

For emergency help outside normal business hours, contact the Government of Canada's Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa. For an immediate local emergency in Tanzania, dial 112.

• Mission: High Commission of Canada in Dar es Salaam.
• Address: 26 Garden Avenue/38 Mirambo Street, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
• Telephone: 255 (22) 216-3300 or +255 (22) 211-2835.
• Email: DSLAM-Consular-Consulaire@international.gc.ca.
• Local emergency number: 112.
• Appointments: The Government of Canada lists online appointment booking for the mission.

The mission can provide consular assistance to Canadians in Tanzania. It is not a replacement for travel insurance, a hospital, police, or the Tanzanian authorities responsible for entry permission. Ask the mission what help is available for your specific situation before assuming it can arrange payment, accommodation, transport, or a safari change. The official contact page is the right place to confirm the service and appointment process.

Contact details and opening hours

The High Commission shares its listed address and telephone contact with its consular function. The official Canada directory gives the address as 26 Garden Avenue/38 Mirambo Street, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with telephone numbers 255 (22) 216-3300 and +255 (22) 211-2835. It also lists the consular email DSLAM-Consular-Consulaire@international.gc.ca.

Book an appointment online before visiting where possible. Do not plan a same-day visit on the assumption that someone will be available without an appointment. Check the official Canada page before travelling to the mission because contact arrangements and access instructions can change.

For urgent help outside business hours, use the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa. For a crime, serious injury, fire, or another immediate threat in Tanzania, call 112 first, then contact Canadian consular staff when it is safe to do so.

The High Commission is in Dar es Salaam, not in Arusha, Mwanza, Zanzibar, or inside a national park. If your safari starts in Arusha or takes you to remote areas, save the contact details before leaving for the bush. It is much easier to find an email address and phone number while you have a reliable connection than after losing a phone at a lodge.

How do you register your trip with Canada?

Use the Government of Canada's traveller registration service before departure and check the Tanzania travel page for the current registration instructions. Registration gives the Canadian government a way to send travel-related information and contact registered travellers when circumstances require it. Confirm the current process on the official Canada travel site because the registration page and instructions can change.

Include your safari dates, accommodation details, internal flights, and time in Zanzibar if those plans are settled. If your itinerary changes, update the registration. Give a trusted person at home your final itinerary as well. Traveller registration does not replace travel insurance, a passport, or the need to follow Tanzanian entry rules.

Keep the mission's phone number and email in two places. A printed copy in your luggage is sensible for a trip that includes remote camps, long drives, or several domestic flights. If you are booking a multi-stop itinerary, ask your safari operator which parts of the plan are easiest to change in an emergency. That is trip planning, not consular protection, and the distinction matters when time is tight.

What should you do if your Canadian passport is lost or stolen?

If your Canadian passport disappears in Tanzania, protect yourself first, report the loss or theft locally where appropriate, and contact the High Commission or Canada's emergency assistance service for instructions.

1. Move to a safe place. If the theft happened during a transfer, at a market, or near a busy transport hub, do not remain in a dangerous location while searching for documents.
2. Check your belongings once. Confirm that the passport is not with your lodge, driver, airline, safari guide, or hotel reception.
3. Record what happened. Write down when and where you last had the passport and keep any police report or reference information.
4. Contact the Canadian mission. Use +255 (22) 216-3300, +255 (22) 211-2835, or the consular email listed by Canada. For urgent help outside business hours, contact the Emergency Watch and Response Centre.
5. Ask what appointment and documents are needed. Do not travel to the mission without confirming the next step. The Government of Canada lists online appointment booking for the High Commission.
6. Tell your operator. A safari company may be able to adjust a transfer or lodge booking while you deal with the document problem. That help does not replace the mission's instructions.

Do not publish a photograph of your passport or personal details in a public travel group. Keep copies of the identification page and your insurance policy separately from the original documents. Before your safari, ask your insurer how it handles document loss and transport changes. The Canadian mission can explain the consular process, but it does not turn a lost passport into a routine travel inconvenience.

What can Canadian consular staff do in an arrest, medical emergency, or evacuation?

Canadian consular staff can provide consular assistance and explain available government services, but they do not replace Tanzanian police, doctors, hospitals, insurers, or evacuation companies. Contact the High Commission as soon as you can safely do so.

Arrest or detention

If Tanzanian authorities arrest or detain you, ask the authorities to notify the Canadian mission. Contact consular staff yourself if possible. Give them accurate details about your location and the authority involved. A Canadian mission cannot cancel local legal proceedings or direct Tanzanian authorities to release you. For the exact assistance available, contact the mission directly rather than relying on advice from a lodge, driver, or online forum.

Medical emergency

For an immediate medical emergency, seek local emergency help first and dial 112 in Tanzania. Then contact your insurer and the Canadian mission. The mission's role is consular assistance. Your insurer and medical provider handle treatment, payment decisions, and any medical transport covered by your policy.

Before leaving for a safari, check whether your policy covers remote-area treatment, air evacuation, pre-existing conditions, and changes to flights or accommodation. A national park transfer can be difficult to rearrange, especially when your group has already left the area. Save your policy number and emergency assistance number offline.

Evacuation

Do not assume the Canadian High Commission will pay for or organise a private evacuation. Ask the mission what consular help is available, then contact your insurer and the medical provider handling the case. If your tour operator is involved, ask it to coordinate logistics while you follow medical and consular instructions.

What is Canada's current travel advice level for Tanzania?

Check the live Government of Canada travel advice for Tanzania immediately before departure for the current advisory level and safety notices. Travel advice can change, so do not rely on a level saved months earlier.

Read the advice again before moving between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, and before travelling to remote safari areas. Save the official page offline if your phone allows it. Your travel insurer may also require you to follow the latest government advice, so check the policy wording before booking non-refundable arrangements.

Canada's Tanzania directory also lists the local emergency number as 112 and directs travellers to the mission for business-hours assistance and to Ottawa for emergency help at any time. Those contacts are worth saving even if your trip is going smoothly.
