What to pack and wear in Botswana in 2026

Quick answer: For Botswana safari packages, pack lightweight, breathable clothing in khaki, olive, brown or other muted colours, plus long sleeves, comfortable trousers, a warm layer and closed walking shoes. Early-morning game drives can be cold, particularly in the dry-season winter, while daytime conditions may be hot.

Use a soft-sided bag rather than a hard suitcase if your itinerary includes light-aircraft transfers. A 20 kg limit is commonly given by safari operators, but the allowance is not universal, so confirm the exact weight and bag dimensions with your operator before you fly.

What should I wear on Botswana game drives?

Wear comfortable layers that you can remove as the day warms up. A typical outfit is a breathable shirt, lightweight trousers, a fleece or sweater, closed shoes, a hat and sunglasses. Add a windproof or rain-resistant jacket for the vehicle, especially if you will leave camp before sunrise.

Choose fabrics that are light and easy to wash. Cotton and cotton-rich fabrics are described as comfortable in hot conditions, while safari operators also recommend practical lightweight materials and clothes that can be layered. Avoid building your wardrobe around one heavy jacket. Several lighter layers take less space and are easier to adjust during a long day outside.

Neutral clothing is the sensible choice for wildlife viewing. Khaki, olive, brown and grey are widely recommended, while bright colours are more noticeable in the bush. Pure white shows dust easily, and dark colours may feel hotter. You do not need to dress like a film version of a safari guide. A plain muted T-shirt and comfortable trousers work perfectly well.

What should I wear in Botswana during the dry-season winter?

During the dry-season winter, generally described in the research as May to August or June to August, bring a warm sweater or fleece, a windproof jacket, and warm accessories for early drives. A beanie, gloves and scarf or buff are useful additions when departures are very early.

Winter afternoons may be comfortable, but the first part of a drive can be a different story. Dress in layers rather than packing one bulky coat. If your itinerary includes walking, choose trousers and a long-sleeved top that cover your skin without restricting movement.

A light pair of long underwear can be useful for travellers who feel the cold, particularly on open vehicles. It is a small item compared with a thick winter coat and can also work as sleepwear in a chilly camp.

What should I wear in Botswana during the wetter months?

For the wetter part of the year, pack a lightweight rain jacket and quick-drying layers. Ker & Downey Botswana recommends a lightweight rain jacket for November to April, while its winter recommendation is a warm or windproof jacket with gloves, a hat and scarf.

Keep one dry layer in your day bag if you will spend many hours outdoors. A brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen still matter when clouds appear, because the advice in the research treats sun protection as a year-round safari basic.

What is the dress code in Botswana towns and cultural settings?

In Botswana towns and rural villages, dress more modestly than you might at a safari camp. Long trousers, collared shirts, loose tops, knee-length skirts or culottes are practical choices for moving around town, while shorts are more accepted in the bush than in ordinary public settings.

Safari camps are generally casual, but town visits, restaurants and cultural activities call for clean, comfortable clothes that cover the shoulders and upper legs. A lightweight collared shirt, loose trousers or a longer skirt is enough. You do not need formal eveningwear for a standard safari itinerary.

Formal occasions have their own expectations. The Peace Corps packing guidance describes long skirts and dresses, modest blouses, collared shirts, dress pants, jackets, ties and head coverings at formal events. If you will attend a wedding, funeral, religious service or business meeting, ask the person or organisation hosting you what is appropriate before you pack.

Do not wear camouflage or clothing with a military design. A Botswana travel guide specifically warns that these clothes can cause trouble with local authorities. This is an easy item to leave at home, and there is no good reason to take the risk.

What are the luggage limits on Botswana light aircraft?

A 20 kg luggage allowance is commonly listed for Botswana safari travel, and safari operators recommend a soft-sided bag because aircraft, vehicles and camp storage have limited space. Treat 20 kg as a planning figure, not a guaranteed allowance for every route.

Your total may include more than your main bag. One safari packing account notes that camera equipment, binoculars and a day bag can count toward the aircraft allowance. Ask your operator four questions before you pay the final balance:

• What is the exact weight allowance for every flight on my itinerary?
• Does the operator measure the bag by weight, dimensions or both?
• Does camera equipment count within the allowance?
• Can I store excess luggage in the city or at the first lodge?

Use a soft duffel with no rigid frame. Pack clothes inside smaller soft organisers, keep essential medication and documents accessible, and wear your heaviest shoes and jacket on travel days. Do not assume that a large wheeled suitcase will fit through an aircraft hold or into a safari vehicle.

Laundry can reduce the amount you need to carry. Ker & Downey Botswana says its camps provide laundry facilities and describes the packing advice as suitable for a seven to 14-day safari. Confirm laundry arrangements with your own camp before relying on them, particularly if your itinerary includes several short stays.

Gear, health and document checklist

Sun and insects

Pack a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. Long sleeves and trousers can add protection from sun and insects, and an insect repellent belongs in your day bag.

Choose a hat that stays on in an open vehicle. A scarf or buff can protect your neck and face from dust, while a small daypack keeps water, sunscreen and an extra layer within reach.

Shoes and camp items

Bring comfortable closed walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots if your itinerary includes walking. Wear them before the trip so you know they do not rub. Sandals or flip-flops are useful around camp and at a pool.

Add a swimsuit if your accommodation has a pool or if swimming is part of your plans. Pack sleepwear, underwear, socks and one simple outfit for towns or lodge dining.

Medication and first aid

Carry personal medication in your hand luggage, with enough for the journey and a little extra time. A basic first-aid kit, hand sanitiser, wet wipes and any medication recommended by your doctor are sensible additions to a safari bag.

Malaria advice depends on your route and personal health. The packing research specifically lists antimalarials as something to bring if needed, rather than as a universal requirement. Ask a travel-health professional about your itinerary before departure, and follow the advice for your own medical circumstances.

Documents and electronics

Keep your passport, visas if required, flight details, lodge confirmations, travel insurance information and copies of important documents together. The research also recommends carrying a yellow-fever certificate if it is required for your journey.

For photography, pack spare batteries, memory cards, a charging kit and a power bank. Binoculars are worth bringing if you have a pair you like. Some camps may provide them, but that is not guaranteed.

Before booking, check entry requirements for your passport nationality and any countries where you transit. Packing advice cannot confirm visa eligibility, vaccination rules or border requirements for every traveller.

What should I not bring to Botswana?

• Camouflage or military-style clothing. Leave it at home because it may cause problems with local authorities.
• Bright safari clothing. Bright colours stand out in the bush. Muted shades are more practical.
• Heavy, bulky clothes. Layers take less space and work across changing temperatures.
• A hard suitcase for a flying-camp itinerary. Use a soft-sided bag and confirm the operator's dimensions before departure.
• Too many outfits. Laundry at some camps means you can repeat clothes during a seven to 14-day safari, subject to your camp's arrangements.
• Unworn walking shoes. Blisters can turn a short walk into a miserable one. Break shoes in before travelling.

The research supplied for this guide does not establish a current Botswana plastic-bag rule or a specific prohibition on bringing plastic bags. Do not assume that a general packing list answers environmental or customs rules. Confirm current restrictions with Botswana's official authorities before you travel.
