The best time is October to February during the dry season. October-November offers lush landscapes with excellent wildlife viewing, while December-February provides the coolest temperatures and clearest skies ideal for trekking. Avoid June-September (rainy season) when roads become impassable and visibility is poor.
Fly into Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa from major international hubs. From there, hire a private vehicle with an experienced driver or join organized tours. Parks are accessible by road: Awash (253km, 3-4 hours), Bale Mountains (400km, 6-7 hours), Simien Mountains (800km, 10-12 hours), and Maze (460km, 7-8 hours). Tour operators provide comprehensive packages with transportation, guides, and permits.
Ethiopia hosts unique endemic species found nowhere else, including the endangered Ethiopian wolf and Walia ibex. You'll also encounter Gelada monkeys, Beisa oryx, Grevy's zebra, African wild ass, various gazelles, primates, and over 460 bird species. Wildlife varies by park and season, with best viewing during early morning hours.
A comprehensive trip requires 7-10 days minimum. A typical 3-day safari covers one park, while visiting multiple parks requires 10-14 days. Day trips to closer parks like Awash are possible from Addis Ababa. Factor in travel time between destinations and acclimatization for high-altitude parks like Simien and Bale Mountains.
Visitors need a valid passport and Ethiopian visa (obtainable on arrival or in advance). Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some regions. Permits for national parks are obtained through tour operators or park offices. Altitude acclimatization is important for high-altitude parks (Simien at 4,550m, Bale at 4,000m+). Bring appropriate clothing for variable temperatures, sturdy hiking boots, sun protection, and malaria prophylaxis for lower-altitude areas.
