Kolmanskop Ghost Town

The best time to visit Kolmanskop Ghost Town is from May to October, when temperatures are cooler and desert photography conditions are often clearer. Kolmanskop is not a Big Five safari site. Nearby arid habitats may support gemsbok, springbok, ostrich, black-backed jackal, and wild desert horses near Garub, while Lüderitz Bay can provide sightings of flamingos, pelicans, Cape fur seals, and other coastal birds.

Allow half a day for Kolmanskop itself and three days for a fuller Lüderitz itinerary. Three days allows time for the ghost town, coastal excursions to Diaz Point, Lüderitz sightseeing, and a visit to the wild horses near Garub.

There is no accommodation inside Kolmanskop because it is a restricted desert heritage site. Stay in Lüderitz, about 10-12 kilometres away, where guesthouses, hotels, boutique properties, and campsites provide access to the ghost town and coastal activities.

Kolmanskop is worth visiting for its preserved diamond-rush history and abandoned buildings filled with Namib Desert sand. It offers a very different experience from Namibia wildlife parks and pairs well with Lüderitz, Aus, Fish River Canyon, or Sossusvlei.

A permit is required, but visitors may be able to explore during standard hours without a private guide; daily guided tours explain the town’s history and improve site safety. A licensed guide or operator is required for permitted 4x4 excursions into restricted diamond areas.
