Lalibela

November through April offers optimal conditions with temperatures 15-28°C, minimal rainfall, and comfortable weather for exploring churches and hiking. Peak season runs January-February and June-September when thousands gather for religious ceremonies and festivals. Shoulder months (March-May, September-October) provide lower prices with occasional short rain bursts. Avoid July-August during the rainy season when soaring temperatures and humidity create uncomfortable conditions.

While Lalibela itself is a cultural destination, nearby national parks offer exceptional wildlife viewing. Simien Mountains National Park (3-4 hours away) hosts endemic gelada baboons, Ethiopian wolves, and Walia ibex. Awash National Park (6-7 hours) features hamadryas baboons, antelopes, and hippos. Bale Mountains National Park (8-9 hours) harbors mountain nyala and critically endangered Ethiopian wolves. The region supports 350+ bird species across all reserves.[2]

Fly from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (AAU) to Lalibela Airport—a 1-hour flight—then arrange ground transportation. Alternatively, drive 10-12 hours from Addis Ababa via Gondar (180 km from Lalibela). Road conditions are good on paved highways during dry season (November-April); rainy season can cause delays. Charter flights available for groups. Domestic airlines like Ethiopian Airlines operate regular service to Lalibela.
