What are Ankarana Special Reserve safari packages in 2027?
Ankarana Special Reserve safari packages combine access to the reserve with guided walks, transport, lodging, and other Madagascar stops. The reserve sits in northern Madagascar and was created in 1956 . It is a good fit for travelers who want a more active park visit than a short vehicle game drive.
Overview of the reserve
Ankarana Special Reserve is a protected area formed from about 150-million-year-old Middle Jurassic limestone . Rainfall averages about 2,000 millimetres each year, a fact that helps explain the reserve's caves, underground water, and plant growth . The rock gives the area its strong visual character.
Ankarana is known for tsingy formations, canyon paths, caves, and water routes. The reserve also offers a chance to see how geology shapes a safari. Here, the walk matters as much as the wildlife search.
Madagascar itself is large, so Ankarana often works best as one part of a regional route. A longer plan may join northern parks, island stays, and coastal areas. Travelers comparing several stops can also review the guide to Madagascar safari and beach holiday costs in 2027.
Key features and activities
Madagascar National Parks lists three useful Ankarana routes. The canyon route takes two hours and has medium difficulty. The cave route takes three hours and has a difficult rating. The perennial-lake route takes three hours and has medium difficulty .
- Canyon route: Two hours, medium difficulty, with tsingy and vegetation.
- Cave route: Three hours, difficult, for travelers ready for a harder walk.
- Perennial-lake route: Three hours, medium difficulty, with a route linked to year-round water.
These times help you judge the shape of a day. A two-hour walk may suit a first visit. A three-hour cave route needs more care with shoes, water, and mobility. Ask your guide which route matches your fitness and weather conditions.
Why the reserve matters
Ankarana matters because it brings geology, walking, and local guiding into one protected-area visit. The reserve is not simply a place to pass through for a photograph. Its routes require time, attention, and a willingness to move on uneven ground.
That combination makes Ankarana useful for couples, active families with older children, photographers, and travelers who have already visited more traditional wildlife parks. It may feel less suitable for people who want every activity to happen from a vehicle.

How much do Ankarana safari packages cost in 2027?
Ankarana safari prices in 2027 start with a reported entry fee of 130,000 Ariary per person per day. Published full-trip examples range from $6,550 for 11 days to £9,945 for 20 nights, while a 14-day North Madagascar tour is listed at R$14,659 per person .
Published 2027 price examples
| Trip example | Duration | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| Audley Madagascar itinerary | 11 days | From $6,550 per person |
| Rainbow Tours Madagascar package | 20 nights | From £9,945 per person |
| North Madagascar tour including Ankarana | 14 days | R$14,659 per person |
The Audley figure applies to a 2027 or 2028 itinerary and is described as indicative. Audley asks travelers to speak with its Madagascar specialists for detailed pricing . Rainbow Tours lists a 2027 Madagascar package from £9,945 per person . SafariBookings lists a 14-day North Madagascar route that includes Ankarana at R$14,659 per person .
These prices use different currencies and trip designs. You should not compare them as if they were identical products. A 20-night holiday has more hotel nights and transport than a short park visit. The 14-day route also includes places beyond Ankarana.
What the park fee tells you
The reported Ankarana entry fee is 130,000 Ariary per person per day for 2027 . This is a reserve access cost, not the full price of a safari package. Your total can also include a guide, vehicle, transfers, accommodation, food, insurance, and other park or activity fees.
Ask for an itemized quote. The quote should show the number of nights, route, room type, transport, guide service, meals, park fees, and airport transfers. This simple check makes package comparisons much fairer.
When you compare budgets, also check the currency date and payment terms. Exchange rates can change the final amount paid in your home currency. Keep the park fee separate from the package total in your own budget notes.
How to compare value
Price alone does not tell you whether an Ankarana package suits your trip. A lower quote may cover fewer nights or a shorter route. A higher quote may include private transport, better lodging, or more stops in northern Madagascar.
- Check whether the quote includes the 130,000 Ariary daily reserve fee.
- Check how many people share the vehicle.
- Check whether the guide joins every Ankarana walking route.
- Check the number of nights near the reserve.
- Check cancellation terms and payment dates.

How should you plan an Ankarana safari?
Start by choosing the walking experience you want, then build transport and nights around it. Ankarana works best when your itinerary leaves enough time for a two-hour canyon route or a three-hour cave or lake route, rather than treating the reserve as a rushed stop.
Getting started
- Set your trip length. Published examples include 11 days, 14 days, and 20 nights .
- Choose your route. Decide whether Ankarana is the main goal or one northern stop.
- Pick your walking level. The reserve lists medium and difficult routes .
- Request a full quote. Ask for park fees, transport, lodging, meals, guides, and transfers.
- Read recent reviews. Look for comments about driving time, guiding, walks, and hotel quality.
Madagascar offers many possible combinations, so a clear route matters. Some travelers may add Nosy Komba or Nosy Iranja after a northern reserve visit. Others may prefer a longer land route with more time in protected areas.
Best practices for the reserve
Wear shoes with firm grip for uneven limestone. Carry water for every walk. A three-hour route can feel demanding when the ground is rough, even if the distance looks short.
Ask the guide about the day’s route before leaving the lodge. The cave path has a difficult rating. The canyon and perennial-lake routes have medium ratings, but your guide still needs to match the walk to your pace .
Keep your schedule flexible. Rainfall in Ankarana averages about 2,000 millimetres a year . That number does not predict your exact travel day, but it shows why route conditions deserve a guide’s advice.
What to pack
- Closed walking shoes with strong grip.
- A refillable water bottle.
- Light clothing that dries quickly.
- Sun protection and a small day bag.
- Any personal medicine you may need.
Do not pack only for wildlife viewing. Ankarana is a walking reserve. Your comfort on rock, in shade, and on uneven paths will shape the day more than a long list of extra gear.
How to choose an operator
Choose an operator that explains the route in plain terms. A good quote names the walking time, difficulty, transport plan, accommodation, and park charges. It should also explain what happens if rain changes the route.
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators and authentic reviews. Use those details to compare service, not only price. You can also explore related destinations such as Lokobe National Park and Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve when building a wider northern route.
