How can British travellers get consular help in South Africa in 2026?

Quick answer: The British High Commission for South Africa safari packages is at 255 Hill Street, Arcadia, Pretoria, Gauteng 0002. British travellers should use the official GOV.UK contact form for routine questions and emergencies because the High Commission provides 24/7 consular support. Public access is by appointment only.

The High Commission can provide consular assistance to British nationals, but it is not a general travel agent, insurer, hospital, police service or bank. The consular section does not handle UK visa applications at this location. This guide covers what to do before a safari, how to seek help if your passport goes missing, and where to check the latest official travel advice.

Where is the British High Commission in South Africa?

The British High Commission is at 255 Hill Street, Arcadia, Pretoria, Gauteng 0002, South Africa. The South African government's diplomatic directory gives the same street address and lists the telephone number as 012 421 7500.

For consular help, use the official GOV.UK contact form rather than arriving without an appointment. The High Commission says public access to the embassy and consular section is by appointment only, and it provides 24/7 consular support for routine enquiries and emergencies.

Need	Official route

What can the British High Commission do for British travellers?

The British High Commission provides consular assistance to British nationals in South Africa. The official UK help page covers crisis assistance, passports and emergency travel documents, legal and detention information, support for British nationals affected by rape or sexual assault, and guidance about deaths abroad.

Consular help does not replace travel insurance or local emergency services. The FCDO advises travellers to research their destination and buy insurance that covers their itinerary, planned activities and emergency expenses. For a safari, check that the policy covers remote lodge transfers, medical treatment and evacuation if those risks apply to your plans. The official guidance supports buying appropriate insurance, but it does not set a required policy or price.

If you are comparing a route through Pretoria, Kruger or another reserve, keep your booking documents and insurance details somewhere accessible. Your safari operator may hold itinerary information and transfer details, but consular staff will still need to deal with your case through the official UK channels.

How do I contact the British High Commission and when is it open?

Contact the British High Commission through its official GOV.UK contact form. The High Commission states that 24/7 consular support is available for routine enquiries and emergencies. Public access to the consular section is by appointment only.

The GOV.UK page gives a separate UK Visas and Immigration telephone service as open Monday to Friday, 24 hours daily, at +44 20 3481 1736, with a charge of £1.37 per minute plus standard network charges. That number is for UK visa enquiries, not a general emergency line for British travellers in South Africa.

The official page does not provide a walk-in schedule for the consular section. Arrange an appointment before travelling to Hill Street. This matters if you are staying at a safari lodge several hours from Pretoria. Do not assume that a same-day visit will be possible.

How do British travellers register their trip?

GOV.UK provides email notifications for updates to its South Africa travel advice. Subscribe before departure and check the advice again shortly before travelling.

The official material used for this guide does not establish a separate mandatory UK traveller-registration form for a holiday in South Africa. Use the FCDO travel advice page for current alerts, and keep your own emergency contacts, insurance details and itinerary available.

Send your itinerary to someone at home as well. Include your flights, lodge names, transfer arrangements and the dates you expect to be out of mobile coverage. That is sensible trip planning, but it is not a substitute for the official GOV.UK advice or consular contact form.

What should I do if my British passport is lost or stolen?

If you lose your British passport in South Africa, use GOV.UK's South Africa help page to apply online for an emergency travel document. The same page links to guidance on renewing, replacing or applying for a British passport while abroad, including current fees and timings.

1. Move to a safe place and protect your remaining documents, cards and phone.
2. Open the official GOV.UK page for help and services in South Africa and select the passport or emergency travel document service.
3. Apply online for an emergency travel document if you do not have a valid British passport. Follow the current application instructions and check the fee and processing information shown on GOV.UK.
4. Contact the High Commission through its official contact form if you need consular assistance with the application or your circumstances. Consular support is available 24/7.
5. Before leaving South Africa, check whether your airline and next destination accept the document you have been issued. The official UK help page directs travellers to the application service, but this article does not set entry rules for another country.

Do not budget around an invented replacement fee or delivery time. Fees and timings can change, so confirm the current figures on the official GOV.UK application page before you apply.

What can consular staff do after an arrest or medical emergency?

After an arrest, use the British High Commission's consular contact route and read the GOV.UK guidance on legal and detention systems in South Africa. The official UK help page specifically provides information for British nationals dealing with those systems.

In a medical emergency, seek local medical care first and use your travel insurance's emergency assistance line. The FCDO recommends insurance that covers emergency expenses and the activities on your itinerary. Consular staff can provide consular assistance, but they do not replace doctors, ambulance services or an insurer.

If you need evacuation from a remote safari area, contact the medical-assistance provider named in your policy and tell your safari operator. The supplied official guidance supports appropriate insurance for emergencies, but it does not promise that the High Commission will arrange or pay for evacuation.

The UK help page also provides guidance for British nationals affected by crises abroad, including large-scale terrorist attacks, natural disasters and political unrest, as well as information for survivors of rape and sexual assault in South Africa. Use the official contact form for consular assistance and follow local emergency instructions.

What is the current travel advice level for South Africa?

The GOV.UK South Africa travel advice page was marked as still current on 15 October 2026 and was updated on 8 July 2026. The published update added information about an online traveller declaration and taking money into South Africa.

The research available for this article does not give a single overall colour-coded or numbered travel-advice level. Read the full GOV.UK page, including its warnings and insurance, safety and security, entry requirements, and legal differences sections, before you travel.

Travel advice is not a guarantee that a trip will be safe. The FCDO says no travel can be guaranteed safe and recommends researching destinations and obtaining suitable insurance. Recheck the page before flying and again before travelling between cities, reserves or border areas.

For safari planning, allow time to confirm your passport, entry documents, insurance, transfers and emergency contacts before paying a deposit. If your route includes a reserve far from Pretoria, ask your operator how communications and medical support work on that itinerary. For ideas, you can also compare Kruger National Park trips and read about Kruger night drive packages without treating a booking page as a substitute for official travel advice.
