Money in Tanzania 2026: Currency, Cards, ATMs & Tipping

For travellers booking Tanzania safari packages, the simplest plan is to carry Tanzanian shillings for everyday spending, use cards where accepted, and keep a reserve of cash for safari areas. Tanzania's 2025 foreign-currency rules require domestic goods and services to be paid in Tanzanian shillings, although bank-card payments remain permitted and a limited exemption covers some tour-operator transactions made for non-resident visitors.

Tips are customary in the safari industry but remain discretionary. Plan your tipping before departure, carry small clean notes, and ask your operator whether guide and camp tips are handled separately. ATMs accept some international cards, including U.S.-issued bankcards, but machines can be out of order and may charge high fees.

Quick answer: what money should you take to Tanzania?

• Currency: The official currency is the Tanzanian shilling, abbreviated TZS or TSh.
• U.S. dollars: Dollar use has long been common in tourism, but current rules require most domestic purchases to use TZS. Exchange foreign currency through an authorised bank or bureau de change before local spending.
• Cards: Bank cards are permitted and are often useful at hotels, lodges and larger tourist businesses. Do not rely on one card or on card payments in remote areas.
• Cash: Carry enough shillings for small purchases, tips and transport between reliable ATMs. The right amount depends on your itinerary, accommodation and what your safari package includes.
• Tipping: Tipping is customary in safari tourism, but it is not compulsory. Published safari guidance commonly suggests about US$8 to US$10 per guest per day for a guide and the same amount per guest per day for camp staff.

What currency is used in Tanzania?

Tanzania uses the Tanzanian shilling, with the international code TZS and the symbol TSh. It is the currency to use for ordinary purchases such as local food, markets, taxis and shops.

The Bank of Tanzania's foreign-currency rules changed the practical advice for visitors. Domestic transactions for goods and services must be conducted in TZS, while tourists and other non-residents are expected to exchange foreign currency at authorised commercial banks or bureaux de change before making local purchases. Bank-card payments remain allowed. A limited exemption lets resident tour operators conduct certain foreign-currency transactions on behalf of non-resident tourists.

This means a lodge or safari company may still discuss prices in dollars, particularly for an international booking, but you should ask how the final payment will be processed. Before paying a balance, confirm the currency, exchange rate used, card surcharge and whether park or accommodation charges are already included.

Which dollar notes are accepted in Tanzania?

Clean, undamaged U.S. dollar notes are the practical choice for tourism payments and tips, but the supplied travel guidance gives conflicting advice about the minimum acceptable issue year. One travel operator advises notes from 2009 or newer, while another says businesses reject notes issued before 2006. Because those recommendations differ, do not rely on an old note being accepted. Take newer notes in good condition and confirm the current policy with your safari operator or exchange provider before travelling.

Do not assume that euros or pounds will receive a fair rate in every tourist business. Licensed banks and bureaux de change can exchange major foreign currencies, but ask for the rate and keep the receipt.

Can I use cards and ATMs in Tanzania?

Yes, international bank cards can work in Tanzania, but card acceptance is strongest in cities, established hotels, larger restaurants and tourist businesses. Smaller shops, local restaurants, street vendors, taxis and remote camps may require cash.

Visa and Mastercard are commonly mentioned for Tanzanian ATMs and tourist businesses, while mobile money is widely used for local transactions. International travellers should not assume that a foreign mobile wallet will work in the same way as a locally registered service.

Where are ATMs available?

ATMs are found in major towns and airports, but access becomes less dependable outside urban centres and on safari. The U.S. State Department warns that Tanzanian ATMs may be out of order and may charge high fees. Withdraw cash before leaving a city for a remote circuit, rather than waiting until the next camp.

Bank and card-provider charges vary. One travel guide reports foreign ATM fees commonly around 3% to 5%, while another traveller guide reports charges of about TZS 10,000 to TZS 15,000 at machines encountered during travel. These are not universal rates. Confirm the current fee on the ATM screen and with your card issuer before accepting the transaction.

How can I avoid a poor ATM exchange rate?

If an ATM offers to charge your home card in pounds, euros or another foreign currency, choose Tanzanian shillings when that option is available. This declines dynamic currency conversion and leaves the exchange calculation to your card provider instead of the ATM operator.

Tell your bank that you will travel to Tanzania, check your international withdrawal limit, and carry a second payment card stored separately from the first. Keep your PIN private and inspect the ATM for anything unusual before inserting your card.

How do I pay park fees, safari costs and lodge bills?

Ask your operator what the package includes before you travel. Safari prices may cover accommodation, transport, meals, park access and activities, but this depends on the itinerary and booking terms. Request a written breakdown showing what remains payable locally.

Park and tourism payments are affected by the move toward TZS for domestic transactions. Tanzania National Parks was reported as requiring transactions in shillings from 1 July, and the tourism sector has been adapting its payment processes. Your operator can confirm the accepted payment method for the specific parks and activities on your route.

At a lodge, settle the bill in the currency and method the property confirms. If the lodge accepts a card, ask whether it adds a surcharge. A card payment is permitted under the foreign-currency rules, but that does not mean every merchant accepts every card or that the merchant absorbs the processing cost.

For a route that includes the Serengeti National Park, plan cash before you leave Arusha or another major town. A safari vehicle may travel for hours between reliable banking facilities, and a failed card terminal is a poor time to discover that your only backup is at the previous lodge.

How much should I tip on safari in Tanzania?

Tipping is customary in Tanzania's safari sector, but it is not mandatory. A tip recognises good service and should reflect the quality of the work and the length of the service.

There is no single official national tariff for tips. Published safari guidance gives different amounts, so use the following as a planning guide rather than a bill:

Service	Published guide amount	How to give it
Group or private safari guide	US$8 to US$10 per guest per day	Give it to the guide at the end of the safari or as your operator advises.
Safari camp or lodge staff	US$8 to US$10 per guest per day	Use the communal tip box where the camp provides one.
City transfer	US$3 to US$5	Give it for good service, especially after a longer transfer.
Porter or luggage help	US$1 to US$2 per bag	Give it directly after the service.
Restaurant service	Around 10% where appropriate	Check whether a service charge is already included.

The guide amounts above come from Expert Africa's Tanzania tipping guidance. Other published safari recommendations are higher, including US$10 to US$20 per person per day for a guide and US$10 to US$20 per person per day for camp staff. That difference is why it is sensible to ask your operator for its current tipping sheet before departure.

If your driver and guide are separate people, ask whether the suggested guide amount covers both roles. If one person drives and guides, do not automatically double the tip. For a camping trip, ask whether the cook, camp crew and guide are tipped separately.

Tip in clean U.S. dollars only if the recipient or operator confirms that this is suitable under current local practice. TZS is the safer choice for ordinary domestic transactions under the current rules. Put staff-pool money in the camp's communal box rather than handing the entire amount to one employee, unless the property gives different instructions.

How much do everyday items cost in Tanzania?

Exact prices change by town, season, exchange rate and whether you buy from a local business or a tourist property. The supplied travel material does not provide a reliable current price list for meals, taxis or shopping, so confirm prices locally rather than budgeting from a fixed online conversion.

Your safari budget should separate prepaid costs from daily spending. Build a cash plan for:

• small meals and drinks outside your lodge;
• taxis, transfers and luggage assistance;
• market purchases and souvenirs;
• tips for guides, camp staff and drivers;
• unexpected card or ATM fees.

For a city stay in Mwanza, Arusha or Dar es Salaam, you may have more opportunities to use an ATM or card. On a remote safari route, cash becomes more important. If your itinerary includes beach time in Nungwi or a lodge stay away from a major town, ask where the last dependable ATM is before you leave the city.

Scams and money safety in Tanzania

Use authorised banks and bureaux de change for foreign-currency exchange. The Bank of Tanzania rules specifically direct tourists and non-residents to authorised commercial banks or bureaux de change.

• Count cash before leaving the exchange desk or ATM.
• Keep exchange receipts until you have finished your trip.
• Do not hand over your card for a staff member to take out of sight.
• Decline an ATM's foreign-currency conversion when you can choose TZS.
• Carry only the cash you need for the day and keep the rest secured separately.
• Use a hotel safe where available, but keep your passport and payment backups accessible according to your accommodation's security advice.
• Check every restaurant or lodge bill for duplicate charges, a service charge and any card surcharge before approving it.

Do not exchange money with an unlicensed street dealer simply because the quoted rate looks attractive. If a payment request conflicts with the currency rules or with your booking confirmation, pause and ask your operator to explain it in writing.

Is tipping customary in Tanzania?

Yes. Tipping is customary in safari tourism, especially for guides and camp staff, but it is discretionary rather than compulsory. Published guidance commonly suggests US$8 to US$10 per guest per day for each of a guide and a camp staff pool, while other operators recommend more.

Which is safer, Botswana or Tanzania?

There is no reliable answer based on destination names alone. Safety depends on the route, transport, accommodation, current local conditions and your own government's travel advice, so compare the current official advisories for both countries before booking.

What is safer, Kenya or Tanzania?

There is no reliable country-wide answer here. Check your government's current travel advisories for the exact regions and border areas on your itinerary, then ask your safari operator how it manages road travel, transfers and emergencies.

What is tipping culture in Kenya?

This article covers Tanzania and does not set a Kenya tipping rule. For Kenya, confirm current guidance with your operator, accommodation and an official travel or tourism authority before you travel.

Which money is used in Kenya, and how is Kenyan money made?

Those are Kenya-specific currency and banknote-production questions, not Tanzania payment questions. Confirm the current Kenyan currency, note designs and production information with Kenya's central bank or an official government source before relying on an answer.
