U.S. Embassy in Namibia: American Traveller Help 2026

Quick answer: The U.S. Embassy in Windhoek is at 38 Metje Street, Klein Windhoek, Windhoek. American citizens with an emergency in Namibia should call +264 61 202 5000 and press 1 to reach the operator 24 hours a day. For non-emergency U.S. citizen questions, email the embassy and expect a response within two business days.

The embassy can provide consular assistance, including help with an emergency, a lost or stolen U.S. passport, arrest, serious crime and other citizen emergencies. It cannot replace travel insurance, provide a safari operator, or decide Namibian immigration matters. For a safari, save the number before departure and keep a copy of your passport details separately from the original.

What can the U.S. Embassy in Windhoek do for American travellers?

The embassy is the U.S. government contact for Americans who need help while abroad. The Department of State says its embassies and consulates provide routine and emergency services to U.S. citizens overseas. The Windhoek contact page specifically lists emergency assistance, alerts, arrest of a U.S. citizen, death of a U.S. citizen, victims of crime and emergency financial assistance among its consular topics.

That help is practical, but it has limits. Consular staff cannot take over a Namibian criminal or civil case, guarantee an outcome with local authorities, or act as your private lawyer. If you are arrested, ask local authorities to notify the U.S. Embassy and contact the embassy yourself. If you become seriously ill, contact local emergency services first when possible, then notify your insurer and the embassy.

For a remote safari, tell your operator where you will be staying and how you will travel between camps. Keep your insurer's emergency number with your passport records. The embassy can be an important contact point, but it is not a substitute for medical evacuation cover or an operator's field support.

What are the U.S. Embassy Windhoek contact details and opening hours?

The U.S. Embassy Windhoek's published emergency number is +264 61 202 5000. The embassy says an American with an emergency should call this number and press 1 to reach the operator 24 hours a day. The same number is listed for calls outside office hours.

The published contact information gives the embassy address and the emergency service details. It does not give ordinary public counter hours in the material used for this guide. Do not assume that a passport appointment or walk-in service is available simply because the emergency line operates around the clock. Passport services are not available on weekends or on Namibian or U.S. holidays.

For a non-emergency question, use the embassy's official contact route rather than calling the emergency line for routine matters. The embassy says non-emergency U.S. citizen inquiries should receive a response within two business days.

Which U.S. office handles visa services for Namibia?

The U.S. Consulate General in Johannesburg processes non-immigrant visa services for Namibia and processes immigrant visa services for applicants from Namibia. The Johannesburg consulate lists a nationwide call centre at 087 550-2160 and directs visa applicants to its Visa Navigator and the U.S. Mission to South Africa visa information.

This is separate from help for an American citizen already travelling in Namibia. If your issue concerns a U.S. visa application, use the Johannesburg consulate's visa instructions. If you are an American citizen facing an emergency in Namibia, use the Windhoek emergency number.

How do American travellers register a trip to Namibia?

American travellers can register a trip through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP. The Department of State recommends STEP so travellers can receive security updates and be located in an emergency.

STEP is useful for a safari because an itinerary may include several towns, private reserves and remote camps. Enter the contact details you will actually use, including your accommodation and an emergency contact at home. Update the registration if your route changes.

STEP does not replace a passport copy, travel insurance or the embassy's emergency number. Save the Windhoek number in your phone before flying: +264 61 202 5000. The Department of State also lists its worldwide emergency numbers as +1 202 501 4444 when calling from abroad and +1 888 407 4747 from the United States and Canada.

What should you do if your U.S. passport is lost or stolen in Namibia?

If your U.S. passport is lost or stolen in Namibia, report it immediately, then contact the U.S. Embassy Windhoek to apply in person for a replacement. Once you report the passport lost or stolen, it is no longer valid for international travel.

1. Make sure it is really missing. Check your room, vehicle, luggage and the last place where you used it. If it was stolen, consider making a police report. A police report is not mandatory for a replacement, but it can help confirm what happened.
2. Report the passport. The Department of State provides an online reporting route. After an online report, the passport is cancelled within one business day, and the Department sends a confirmation email after cancellation.
3. Contact the embassy. Call +264 61 202 5000 if the loss creates an emergency or you need urgent travel help. The embassy says its passport section handles first passports, renewals and replacements for lost or stolen passports.
4. Attend in person. You must appear in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate to apply for a replacement passport abroad. Bring details of when and where the passport disappeared, plus a police report if you made one.
5. Prepare proof of identity and citizenship. A copy of the lost passport, a birth certificate or other citizenship evidence can help. If you cannot show proof of citizenship, you can ask for a file search, which may help with an emergency passport.
6. Explain your travel deadline. If your safari has internal flights, a border crossing or a return flight soon, tell consular staff. The embassy says processing times vary with demand. Travellers leaving within two weeks should review the emergency passport information.

A replacement passport issued abroad may have limited validity, and an emergency passport may be valid for up to one year. The Department of State says you may exchange a limited-validity emergency passport for a full-validity passport after your trip. Confirm the current application fee and appointment process on the embassy's official passport page before travelling.

Most U.S. embassies and consulates cannot issue passports on weekends or holidays, although after-hours duty officers assist with life-or-death emergencies. That distinction matters in Namibia. A Sunday departure after a lost passport may require emergency help, but it does not guarantee that a regular passport service will be available that day.

What can the embassy do after an arrest, medical emergency or serious crime?

If Namibian authorities arrest an American citizen, contact the U.S. Embassy Windhoek and ask local authorities to notify the embassy. The embassy's contact page lists arrest of a U.S. citizen as a consular assistance topic.

Consular staff can be a communication channel between you and your family, provide information about local procedures and help you find local legal or medical contacts. They do not act as your lawyer, investigate the case for you or order Namibian authorities to release you. For exact assistance in an individual case, contact the embassy directly.

For a medical emergency, seek urgent local medical care first when possible. Then call your travel insurer, your safari operator and the embassy. The Department of State warns that the availability and quality of medical services can vary greatly by location and advises travellers to contact the nearest embassy or consulate for assistance.

In a remote area, your operator may be the fastest practical route to local transport or a clinic because it knows the camp and road network. That does not remove the need for insurance. Before booking, ask what emergency transport the trip includes and what costs remain yours.

If you are the victim of a serious crime, move to a safe place, contact local emergency services when necessary, preserve relevant information and contact the embassy. The Windhoek contact page lists victims of crime and emergency assistance among its citizen services.

What is the current travel advice level for Namibia?

The current Travel Advisory for Namibia says American travellers should exercise increased caution because of crime and health. It says non-violent crimes of opportunity are common and also flags health considerations.

The advisory is guidance, not a ban on travel. Read the full Namibia advisory before you book, then check it again close to departure. A safari route can move between urban areas, long-distance roads and remote reserves, so general country advice will not answer every question about a specific camp or transfer.

The Department of State recommends checking travel advisories as a first step when planning an international trip. For practical planning, ask your operator about driving after dark, valuables, phone coverage, emergency contacts and the distance to medical care. These questions matter more when an itinerary includes long self-drive sections or isolated lodges.

Do American citizens need a visa for Namibia?

The supplied official research does not provide the current visa requirement, fee or permitted stay for American citizens entering Namibia. Confirm the rule, fee and application process with Namibia's official immigration or diplomatic authorities before booking non-refundable travel.

Do not treat U.S. Embassy Windhoek as the authority that decides whether an American may enter Namibia. The U.S. embassy can assist an American citizen in an emergency, but Namibian authorities control Namibian entry requirements.
