United States Embassy in Mozambique: American Help 2026

If you are comparing Mozambique safari packages, save the U.S. Embassy in Maputo's contact details before you travel. The embassy is at Avenida Marginal, 5467, Maputo, and its official emergency contact page lists +258 84 095 8000 for emergencies involving an American citizen. Routine American Citizen Services require an appointment.

The embassy can help American citizens after serious illness, arrest, death, or serious crime, and it can help crime victims seek medical care, file a police report, obtain emergency funds from home, and replace a stolen passport. It cannot handle routine passport or citizenship questions through the emergency service.

Quick answer: where is the United States embassy in Mozambique?

The United States embassy for American travellers in Mozambique is the U.S. Embassy Maputo at Avenida Marginal, 5467, Maputo. For an emergency involving an American citizen, call +258 84 095 8000 during the embassy's stated emergency service, and use the embassy's published after-hours number before travelling because its official pages show more than one contact number.

• Embassy: U.S. Embassy Maputo, Avenida Marginal, 5467, Maputo, Mozambique.
• Emergency involving an American citizen: +258 84 095 8000.
• American Citizen Services email: MaputoUSCitizens@state.gov.
• Consular email: MaputoConsular@state.gov.
• Routine services: appointment required.

Consular staff can provide help in serious cases, but the embassy is not a substitute for travel insurance, a local hospital, police, or an organised evacuation provider. The official embassy information supplied here does not set out a general promise to pay for medical treatment, transport, or evacuation. Ask the embassy and your insurer what applies to your circumstances.

Contact details and opening hours

The embassy's published office hours are Monday to Thursday from 07:30 to 17:30 and Friday from 07:30 to 11:30. The embassy is closed on U.S. federal holidays and Mozambican national holidays.

There is a small but important inconsistency across the embassy's official pages. The contact page lists +258 84 095 8001 for U.S. citizens needing emergency services after hours, on weekends, or on holidays, while the embassy's passport page lists +258 84 095 8000 and also shows +258 85 591 1911 for emergency assistance. Save the numbers before departure and verify the current contact details on the embassy website. If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first when possible, then notify the embassy.

The embassy also publishes local numbers for Maputo services, including Central Hospital at +258 21 325000 or +258 21 325009, firefighters at +258 21 322222, the police at +258 21 325031, and the airport at +258 21 465827 or +258 21 465829. These numbers are useful if your safari starts in Maputo or you are transiting the capital, but confirm the number you need on the official embassy page before relying on it.

How do American travellers register a trip to Mozambique?

American travellers can use the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, to receive security updates from the U.S. Embassy. The embassy's traveller page directs Americans to enroll in STEP, and the U.S. Department of State's MyTravelGov service provides access to STEP enrolment.

Register before you leave, especially if your itinerary includes remote safari areas, internal flights, road transfers, or several lodges. Keep your accommodation details, travel dates, passport information, and an emergency contact available while completing the registration. STEP is a communication service. It does not replace insurance, a passport, or a confirmed booking.

For urgent help while abroad, the embassy's traveller information lists the Department of State's 24-hour numbers as +1 202 501 4444 from abroad and +1 888 407 4747 from the United States and Canada. Use the Maputo embassy number for an emergency in Mozambique when you can reach the mission directly.

What should you do if your passport is lost or stolen in Mozambique?

If your American passport is lost or stolen in Mozambique, report the problem to the embassy's Consular Section and ask for the current passport appointment instructions. The embassy states that it can help crime victims obtain a new passport, and it requires personal appearance for a lost or stolen passport.

1. Get to a safe place. If the passport was stolen during a serious crime, call the embassy's emergency number and contact local police. The embassy identifies a U.S. citizen who is a victim of serious crime as an emergency case.
2. Contact the embassy. Call +258 84 095 8000 for an emergency involving an American citizen, or email the Consular Section for routine instructions.
3. Arrange an appointment. Non-emergency American Citizen Services are provided by appointment.
4. Attend in person. The embassy says you must appear personally if you are replacing a lost or stolen passport, applying for an emergency passport for immediate travel, or applying for a child under 16.
5. Check the current payment and document instructions. The supplied embassy material confirms the personal-appearance rule but does not provide a complete document checklist or current passport fee. Confirm both directly with the official passport page before going to Maputo.

If you are travelling between Maputo and a safari area such as Beira, keep a separate copy of your passport details and your embassy contact information. Do not put the only copy in the same bag as your passport.

Arrest, medical emergencies and evacuation: what can consular staff do?

Call the embassy if an American citizen dies, is arrested, suffers serious injury or illness, or becomes the victim of a serious crime in Mozambique. The embassy lists these situations as emergencies.

For a crime victim, the Consular Section can help seek medical care, file a police report, facilitate emergency funds from home, and obtain a new passport if the passport was stolen. Consular staff can also help connect an American citizen with local services, but the official information supplied here does not promise that the embassy will arrange or pay for evacuation.

If a serious medical problem occurs during a safari, tell your safari operator and lodge immediately, contact local medical services, and call your insurer's emergency assistance line. Then contact the embassy for consular guidance. Before booking, check whether your policy covers remote medical transport and whether the operator knows the nearest suitable medical facility for each camp on your route.

Arrest is also an emergency involving an American citizen. Call the embassy and ask for consular assistance. Do not use the emergency line for visa questions, routine passport or citizenship questions, notarial services, Social Security, Veterans Affairs, or taxation. The embassy specifically excludes those matters from its emergency category.

What is the current Mozambique travel advice level from travel.state.gov?

Check the current Mozambique Travel Advisory on Travel.State.gov immediately before departure. The official research available for this article confirms that the U.S. Embassy directs travellers to Travel.State.gov for more information, but it does not provide a current advisory level in the supplied material, so confirm the live level on the official advisory page rather than relying on an old summary.

The advisory page says Americans may call the U.S. Embassy for help reaching police, ambulance, and domestic violence services, using +258 84 095 8000 or the embassy's other published contact route. Read the advisory alongside any current embassy alerts before you confirm internal flights, road transfers, and lodge bookings.

Security planning matters more on a safari than it does on a short city break. Share your route with someone at home, keep your passport secure, and make sure your operator has your emergency contact details. If your itinerary includes Gorongosa National Park safari planning, ask in advance how the operator handles delayed flights, road closures, medical incidents, and a missed connection.
