June to August and December to February offer the clearest skies and driest conditions for gorilla trekking and volcano climbing. Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but rainy seasons (March-May and September-November) feature muddy trails and reduced visibility. Peak visitor season (June-August) means higher accommodation prices and busier trekking groups; November-May sees fewer tourists and lower rates, though afternoon rainfall is common.

Kisoro Town provides access to mountain gorillas (approximately 880 individuals across Bwindi and Mgahinga parks), golden monkeys (2,000-4,000 in the Virunga region), chimpanzees in nearby Kibale National Park, and over 350 bird species including the endangered Rwenzori turaco. Forest elephants, leopards, and African buffalo inhabit the rainforest but are rarely seen. The region is home to 20 primate species total, including blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and Rwenzori colobus. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park protects one of the world's most endangered primate populations.

From Kampala, drive 540 kilometers south (8-9 hours) on the paved highway toward Kabale, then continue to Kisoro. Alternatively, take a scheduled charter flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip (1 hour flight time), then transfer by 4x4 vehicle to your lodge. From Rwanda's Kigali, Kisoro is 135 kilometers south (4 hours drive). Most travelers fly to Entebbe, spend 1-2 days in Kampala, then fly or drive to Kisoro.
