Quick answer: where is Australia's embassy for Tanzania?

Australia does not have an embassy or high commission in Tanzania. It has an Australian Consulate in Dar es Salaam for limited consular help, and the Australian High Commission in Nairobi handles full consular help for Australians in Tanzania.

• Australian Consulate, Dar es Salaam: Level 3, Address Building, Plot 1403/01, Bains Singh Avenue, Msasani Peninsula, Dar es Salaam.
• Phone: +255 744 384 730.
• Email: australianconsulate.daressalaam@gmail.com.

The consulate is useful for local contact in Dar es Salaam, but it is not a full-service Australian embassy. If you are planning a safari outside the city, save the emergency number before travelling. A phone with roaming or a working local connection matters when you are moving between airports, camps and remote parks. SafariFind's guide to Tanzania SIM cards, eSIMs, Wi-Fi and plugs covers that practical preparation.

Contact details and opening hours

The Australian Consulate in Dar es Salaam is at Level 3, Address Building, Plot 1403/01, Bains Singh Avenue, Msasani Peninsula, Dar es Salaam. Its published telephone number is +255 744 384 730, and its email address is australianconsulate.daressalaam@gmail.com.

The consulate provides limited consular help by appointment only. The official contact information supplied for this article does not give public opening hours. Contact the consulate before travelling to the address, and confirm whether it can handle your specific request.

For full consular help, contact the Australian High Commission in Nairobi. Its address is Limuru Road, Rosslyn, Nairobi, Kenya, and its phone number is +254 20 4277 100. The Australian Government advises travellers to check the High Commission's website for opening hours and temporary closures.

There is an older announcement about the appointment of Honorary Consul Anna Rabin that says the post would provide passport and consular services, including for Australians in Zanzibar. The current Australian Government consulate page says the Dar es Salaam consulate does not issue passports and provides limited help by appointment. Use the current DFAT and Smartraveller information when the pages differ.

Registering your trip

Check Smartraveller before departure for Australia's current Tanzania travel advice, updates and traveller services. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade directs Australians travelling to Tanzania to Smartraveller, where official travel information and updates are published.

Save your itinerary, accommodation details, passport copy, insurance policy and emergency contacts somewhere you can access without your checked luggage. Give those details to a trusted person at home. If your safari includes remote areas such as Serengeti National Park, ask your operator how it handles delayed flights, road disruption and communications before you pay a deposit.

Do not assume that trip registration replaces travel insurance or direct contact with the Consular Emergency Centre. For the current Australian traveller registration or alert options, use the official Smartraveller website rather than an old third-party form.

Lost or stolen passport: what should Australian travellers do?

If you lose your passport in Tanzania, contact the Australian Consulate in Dar es Salaam and the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre as soon as possible. The Dar es Salaam consulate does not issue passports, so ask the official contact about the correct next step and whether your case must be handled by the Australian High Commission in Nairobi.

1. Move to a safe place and keep any remaining identity documents secure.
2. Contact the Australian Consulate in Dar es Salaam on +255 744 384 730 if you can do so safely.
3. Call +61 2 6261 3305 from Tanzania if you cannot reach the consulate or need urgent consular help.
4. Ask the consulate or Consular Emergency Centre how to proceed with your passport case. Do not turn up without confirming the appointment or service arrangement.
5. Tell your safari operator and insurer. They may help with local logistics, transport and changes to your itinerary, but consular staff do not replace your travel insurer.

Keep a digital copy of your passport separately from the original. Before a safari, check whether your itinerary includes domestic flights or border crossings. Losing a passport late in a trip can affect both transport plans and your ability to leave Tanzania, so raise the problem before your next transfer.

Arrest, medical emergencies and evacuation

For an arrest, serious illness, injury or other urgent problem, contact the Australian Consulate in Dar es Salaam or Australia's 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on +61 2 6261 3305. Australian consular help in Tanzania is limited, and the High Commission in Nairobi provides full consular help for Tanzania.

Consular staff cannot take the place of Tanzanian police, hospitals, doctors, airlines or travel insurers. If you are arrested, you remain subject to Tanzanian law. If you are injured or ill, contact local medical providers and your travel insurer as well as the Australian authorities. Ask your safari operator for help with transport and local coordination, especially if you are in a national park or a remote camp.

Evacuation is a matter to check with your insurer before booking. Read the policy for medical evacuation, repatriation, activities included in your safari and exclusions for remote areas. The Australian Consulate can provide consular contact, but travellers should not assume that the government will pay ordinary medical, hotel, transport or evacuation costs. Confirm the policy in writing before departure.

What is the current travel advice level for Tanzania?

Check the current Tanzania travel advice on Smartraveller immediately before departure because the advice level and regional warnings can change. The official Australian Tanzania page is the place to confirm the current level, safety notices and updates.

That check should be part of your safari planning, not a last-minute formality. Review the advice again before travelling to areas outside the main tourist routes, and make sure your insurance follows the advice in force for the places you plan to visit. DFAT also directs Australians to get appropriate travel insurance before travelling overseas.

For logistics, compare your route with the advice and allow room for changes. SafariFind's guide to getting around Tanzania by flights, roads and transfers explains why travel times can matter when you are connecting a city stay with a park or island visit.
