How to Get Around Tanzania: Flights, Roads and Transfers 2026

Quick answer: The usual ways to travel around Tanzania safari packages are private road transfers, domestic flights between major airports, and light aircraft to bush airstrips. For a classic northern circuit, fly internationally to Kilimanjaro International Airport, drive between nearby parks, and consider a fly-in leg if your itinerary includes the Serengeti or a remote camp.

Road travel gives you more time on the ground and works well for Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro routes. Flights save time on long internal journeys, but baggage limits are tighter and airstrips are often far simpler than international airports.

Which is the best way to get around Tanzania?

The best option depends on the parks in your itinerary. Use a private 4x4 for connected northern-circuit routes, a domestic flight for long distances or limited time, and a small aircraft when your camp is linked to a bush airstrip. Buses and trains are useful for independent travel between cities, but they are less convenient for a safari that depends on park gates, camp check-in times and game drives.

• Private 4x4: The practical choice for a multi-park safari, with a guide and vehicle arranged around park access and camp locations.
• Domestic flight: Useful between Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Zanzibar, Mwanza and other regional destinations.
• Fly-in safari: The fastest way to reach many Serengeti camps, although the aircraft carries limited luggage and usually lands on a basic airstrip.
• Bus or train: Better suited to budget travel and city-to-city journeys than to a tightly timed safari.

Which airport should you use for a Tanzania safari?

Kilimanjaro International Airport, Julius Nyerere International Airport and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport are the main arrival points for safari and beach itineraries. Arusha Airport is a domestic gateway for safari flights rather than an international arrival airport.

Airport	Code	Best suited to
Kilimanjaro International Airport	JRO	Northern safari circuit and Kilimanjaro climbs
Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam	DAR	Southern parks, Dar es Salaam and domestic connections
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, Zanzibar	ZNZ	Zanzibar stays and mainland connections
Arusha Airport	ARK	Domestic and bush flights to safari areas

Kilimanjaro International Airport is usually the simplest choice for a northern safari because it places you near Arusha and the main northern route. Dar es Salaam is more useful for southern itineraries, including Nyerere and Ruaha, and for onward domestic flights. Zanzibar works well when the trip starts or ends on the island.

Arusha Airport is about 8 kilometres from central Arusha and is used for domestic services to safari airstrips, Manyara and Zanzibar. It has a small terminal, so arrange your airport transfer in advance rather than assuming you will find the same range of services available at a large international airport. If you are spending time in town before your safari, SafariFind's guide to things to do in Arusha can help you plan those extra days.

Can you fly direct to Tanzania?

Yes, some international travellers can fly directly to Tanzania, depending on their departure city and the current airline timetable. KLM has published services to Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam, while Qatar Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines publish routes to one or more of Tanzania's principal arrival airports.

There is no single direct route for every country. Travellers from North America and Australia commonly need at least one connection, while Gulf, European and regional hubs provide onward links to Tanzania. Check the airline's current timetable before booking, especially for seasonal services.

What domestic flights and fly-in safari options are available?

Domestic carriers such as Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, Regional Air, Air Excel, Flightlink, As Salaam and Precision Air connect Arusha, Zanzibar, major cities and safari airstrips. Routes and frequencies change, so match the flight to the exact camp and airstrip shown on your booking rather than relying only on the park name.

Arusha Airport connects with airstrips serving the Serengeti, including Seronera, Kogatende and Grumeti, as well as Manyara and Zanzibar. A fly-in itinerary normally ends with a 4x4 pickup at the airstrip and a short transfer to camp. That makes it particularly useful for reaching Serengeti National Park without spending a full day on a rough road.

Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar is a common domestic route, with flights taking about one hour. Arusha to Zanzibar is listed at about one hour and 15 minutes. Dar es Salaam to Mwanza and Kilimanjaro to Dar es Salaam are also listed at about one hour, although the published schedule and actual journey can change.

How much luggage can you take on a fly-in safari?

Many fly-in safari services apply a 15 kilogram luggage limit per passenger, including children, according to the available 2026 fly-in guidance. Soft-sided bags are the safer choice because small aircraft have limited storage space. Confirm the exact allowance, dimensions and excess-baggage rules with the airline or safari operator before packing.

Do not assume that your international allowance carries over to a bush flight. Ask whether the operator can store extra luggage in Arusha, at your hotel or at another agreed point. That small detail prevents a surprisingly awkward airport conversation.

How early should you arrive for a domestic flight?

The available 2026 domestic-flight guidance recommends arriving about 60 minutes before departure at Arusha Airport. Small terminals may feel relaxed, but baggage weighing and aircraft changes can still affect the process.

For a separate domestic ticket after an international arrival, leave a generous buffer. If bags must be collected, immigration completed and security cleared again, a short connection becomes risky. Separate tickets usually do not give you the same protection as one continuous booking if the first flight is delayed.

What are road transfers between Tanzania's key parks like?

Road transfers are the standard choice when parks sit on the same safari route. A private 4x4 lets the driver plan around park gates, stops and game viewing, while the vehicle remains available for the next part of the itinerary.

Arusha commonly acts as the starting point for northern safaris. From there, travellers may continue by road towards Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. The exact driving time depends on the camp, gate, road condition and stops, so ask for a day-by-day transfer plan before paying a deposit. The distance shown on a map does not tell you how long the road section will feel.

Dar es Salaam is the more natural road and air hub for southern Tanzania. A domestic flight is often the practical way to reach the southern parks, while a road itinerary can work when the route itself is part of the trip. Southern destinations can be widely separated, so compare the time spent in transit with the number of nights available for game drives.

Long-distance buses connect Dar es Salaam with cities and towns across the country. Published travel guidance describes Dar es Salaam to Arusha as roughly 10 to 11 hours by bus, Dar es Salaam to Dodoma as about 7 to 8 hours, and a journey to Mwanza as roughly 19 to 20 hours. Traffic, road conditions and stops can extend those times.

These bus journeys can make sense for independent travellers with flexible schedules. They are a poor fit when a delayed arrival could cause you to miss a park entry, camp transfer or internal flight. For a safari, ask the operator whether the road leg is included, whether a private vehicle is used, and where the driver collects you.

Are trains, buses and ride-hailing available in Tanzania?

Yes. Tanzania has intercity buses, trains, local minibuses called daladala, motorcycle taxis called boda boda, tuk-tuks called bajaji, taxis and ride-hailing services in some urban areas. These options are most useful inside cities or between major towns, not for moving between remote safari camps.

Hotels and restaurants can arrange taxis, and Uber is reported as operating in Tanzania. Availability and practical coverage depend on the city, so confirm the service in the app after arrival and keep a hotel-arranged taxi as a backup.

Dar es Salaam also has the DART bus system, while ferries connect the mainland with islands and coastal destinations. Zanzibar has taxis, daladala services, private transfers and scooter rentals. For visitors carrying safari luggage, a pre-arranged private transfer is usually simpler than changing between several local services.

Train travel suits travellers who have time and want a slower journey. It does not replace a safari vehicle once you reach a national park, and a rail ticket does not normally solve the final transfer to a lodge or camp.

Is it better to fly or drive on a Tanzania safari?

Drive when the parks form a logical route and you want the guide, vehicle and game-viewing flexibility that comes with a road safari. Fly when the itinerary covers a large distance, the trip is short, or a remote camp has a convenient airstrip.

Choose driving when...	Choose flying when...
You are linking nearby northern parks.	You need to cover a long internal distance.
You want a private guide and vehicle throughout the route.	Your time is limited and a long road leg would remove a night from the safari.
You want flexibility for stops and route changes.	Your camp is connected to a bush airstrip.
Your luggage includes bulky equipment that may not suit a light aircraft.	You can pack within the airline's soft-bag and weight rules.

A mixed itinerary is often the sensible answer. Drive from JRO through the northern circuit, fly into the Serengeti for a longer stay, or fly between Zanzibar and the mainland before continuing by 4x4. Your operator can check whether the flight arrives at the right airstrip for the camp and whether the transfer is included in the package.

Before booking, compare the total cost rather than the flight fare alone. Include airport transfers, extra hotel nights, baggage storage, road transfers to the airstrip and the value of the time saved. Current domestic fares change, so confirm the price directly through the carrier or with the operator arranging the full itinerary.

What should international travellers arrange before travelling around Tanzania?

• Choose the arrival airport around the first safari region, not simply the cheapest international fare. JRO generally suits the northern circuit, DAR suits southern routes, and ZNZ suits Zanzibar stays.
• Give separate flight bookings a wide connection buffer. International arrivals may involve baggage collection, immigration and another security check before a domestic departure.
• Confirm the exact bush airstrip, baggage allowance, aircraft type and pickup arrangements before accepting a fly-in itinerary.
• Ask for realistic road-transfer times between each camp. Park gates, road conditions and stops matter as much as the straight-line distance.
• Keep your first and last travel days light. A delayed international flight or a changed domestic schedule is easier to absorb when there is no same-day safari activity at risk.
• Carry travel insurance that fits your itinerary, including any flight, medical and evacuation cover you require. Check the policy wording before departure.
• For currency, cards and cash planning, read SafariFind's guide to money in Tanzania. Safari camps and small airstrips do not always offer the same payment options as major cities.
• Check your government's current travel advice for Tanzania, including entry rules, health guidance, regional security advice and any restrictions that apply to your nationality.
