The best time is June to October during the dry season when weather is cooler and visibility is excellent for game drives. Temperatures range from 21°C in highlands to 29°C in lowlands. Avoid December to April when heavy rainfall (averaging 900mm annually) can make road access challenging.
Mbeya is accessible via Mbeya International Airport, which connects to major Tanzanian airports. The city is also well-connected by road networks, making it accessible for travelers journeying through Tanzania. It serves as a hub on the southern circuit of Tanzanian National Parks, close to Kitulo and Ruaha National Parks.
The region hosts diverse wildlife including elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, waterbuck, eland, and various big cats (lion, leopard, cheetah). You can also find hippos, crocodiles, sitatunga, and numerous bird species. Wildlife numbers are increasing throughout the parks near Mbeya.
Beyond game drives, visitors can enjoy guided walking safaris, night game drives, bird watching, trekking and hiking (including hikes to Marangi forest), photography, trout fishing, and cultural heritage exploration. Lake Ngozi Nature Reserves also offer meditation and nature viewing opportunities.
A minimum of 3 days is recommended to experience Mbeya City and nearby attractions like Kitulo National Park. However, a 12-day safari itinerary through the southern circuit provides a more comprehensive exploration of the region's national parks, wildlife, and cultural experiences.
