Mnemba Island

Mnemba Island is accessed exclusively by boat transfer from Matemwe Beach on Zanzibar's northeast coast, located 3-4.5 kilometers away. Visitors must first reach Zanzibar Stone Town Airport (ZNZ) by flying from Dar es Salaam or other regional hubs, then travel approximately 45-60 minutes by road to Matemwe Beach. All boat transfers are arranged through AndBeyond Mnemba Island Lodge and are weather-dependent.

Morning departures operate at 6:00 AM (summer) or 6:30 AM (winter), with the latest afternoon transfer at 4:30 PM year-round. Transfers are weather-dependent because there are no jetties or permanent docking facilities; all landings occur directly on the beach requiring wading. Additionally, crossing the channel after dark is prohibited for safety reasons. During the wet season (March-May, November-December), rough seas may prevent transfers entirely.

Mnemba Island is home to approximately 600 coral reef fish species, endangered Green Sea Turtles, seasonal Humpback Whales, three species of dolphins, and Whale Sharks (the world's largest fish species).
