What to pack and wear for Tanzania in 2026

Quick answer. For a Tanzania safari, pack lightweight shirts, long trousers, a fleece or light jacket, comfortable closed walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent and a soft-sided bag if your itinerary includes light aircraft. Neutral colours such as khaki, olive and muted brown are practical for game drives. Avoid military-style camouflage, and keep beachwear at the beach or pool.

For your Tanzania safari packages, plan clothing around cool early mornings, warm afternoons, dust, sun and the places you will visit after the safari. Public dress is conservative, particularly in Zanzibar, so bring one outfit that covers your shoulders and knees.

What to pack for a Tanzania safari

A useful safari wardrobe is light, loose-fitting and easy to layer. You do not need a new outfit for every day. Several safari operators note that lodges and camps may offer laundry, so a smaller selection of clothing can work for a longer itinerary. Confirm laundry arrangements with your operator before you travel.

• Lightweight short-sleeved shirts or T-shirts for warm afternoons.
• Lightweight long-sleeved shirts for sun, wind and insect cover.
• Breathable trousers or convertible trousers. Jeans are usable, but they are heavier, hotter and slower to dry than lightweight trousers.
• One fleece, sweater or light jacket for dawn game drives and higher areas.
• One windproof or rainproof outer layer if your itinerary or season calls for it.
• Underwear, socks and sleepwear.
• A swimsuit for a lodge or hotel pool. Keep it for the pool or beach area.
• A scarf, shawl or wrap. It can cover your shoulders in towns and religious settings and protect your neck from dust and sun.
• Comfortable closed walking shoes or trainers, plus sandals for relaxed time at camp or a resort.
• A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm.
• Insect repellent, personal medication and a small first-aid kit.

What to wear on a Tanzania safari

Wear breathable layers in neutral or muted colours, with long sleeves and trousers available for sun, insects and cool early starts. The best outfit is the one you can sit in comfortably for several hours, then adjust as the temperature changes.

Which colours should you wear on safari?

Choose khaki, olive, beige, grey or muted brown for safari clothing. These colours are widely recommended for game drives and walking activities because they are less visually prominent than bright clothing.

Avoid bright colours where possible, especially if your itinerary includes walking in the bush. Avoid military-pattern camouflage as well. A Tanzanian safari packing guide warns that camouflage or military-style clothing may be unlawful in East Africa, so leave it at home rather than relying on an assumption about what is permitted.

What to pack for Tanzania safari in August, September and October

Pack light layers for August, September and October: breathable daytime clothes, long sleeves, a fleece or light jacket for early starts, and rain protection suited to your route. These months can still feel cool before sunrise and warm later in the day, so a single heavy outfit is less useful than layers.

For a northern circuit itinerary that includes the Serengeti National Park, bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent and protection for dust. A neck gaiter or scarf and a dry bag can help protect personal items and camera equipment on dusty tracks.

What to pack for Tanzania in June and July

For Tanzania in June or July, pack warm layers for early morning game drives, including a fleece or light jacket, long trousers and a wind layer. Add lightweight clothes for warmer afternoons, because safari conditions can change noticeably during the day.

For July safari travel, the same approach applies. Wear layers at departure, then remove them as the day warms. If your itinerary includes a high-altitude area or mountain activity, ask your operator what clothing and footwear the route requires before you book. The research supports warmer clothing for high areas such as the Kilimanjaro region, but it does not establish one universal mountain packing list.

What should you wear in Arusha, Tanzania?

In Arusha, wear neat, comfortable clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, with a light jacket for cooler periods. Arusha is a city and a common safari base, so safari clothes work for transfers, but a clean smart-casual outfit is more appropriate for restaurants, offices and hosted visits. Modest public dress is the safer choice in Tanzania, particularly outside tourist resorts.

What to wear in Tanzania as a woman

Women travelling in Tanzania should pack lightweight trousers, knee-covering skirts or dresses, tops that cover the shoulders, and a scarf or wrap for extra coverage. Sleeveless or shorter clothing may be acceptable at some resorts, but modest clothing is more appropriate in towns, villages, markets and religious areas.

On a game drive, comfortable shorts may be practical in a vehicle or lodge setting, but bring longer options for stops and visits outside the vehicle. On the coast, wear swimwear only at the beach, pool or resort, then cover up before walking through towns or local communities.

Dress code in towns, Zanzibar and cultural areas

Public dress in Tanzania is conservative, especially in Zanzibar. Revealing clothing outside beach resorts may cause offence, according to the United States Department of State.

Pack a long skirt, loose trousers or a below-knee dress, plus a top that covers the shoulders. A scarf or shawl is useful when an unexpected visit takes you to a religious or more conservative setting. You do not need to wear traditional Tanzanian clothing unless a host invites you to do so, and you should not treat sacred or cultural clothing as a costume.

Beachwear belongs at the beach, pool or resort. It is a poor choice for markets, villages, city streets and religious sites. If your trip includes Nungwi or another Zanzibar beach area, pack a cover-up that you can put on as soon as you leave the sand.

For a coastal extension to Mnemba Island, the same practical rule applies. Swimwear is for the beach or pool. Keep a loose shirt, trousers, skirt or wrap ready for transfers and public areas.

What luggage do you need for a Tanzania safari?

If your safari includes light aircraft, use a soft-sided duffel and confirm the exact weight and size allowance with the operator before departure. The research includes a commonly cited 15 kg allowance for local safari flights, including carry-on in one Tanzania packing guide, while another guide describes 15 kg as a common allowance. Treat 15 kg as a planning warning, not a universal airline rule.

Hard-sided suitcases may not fit in small aircraft holds. A soft bag is easier to stow, and a small daypack is useful for the vehicle. Keep valuables, medication, documents and one change of clothes with you according to your operator's baggage instructions.

If your trip is road-based, your luggage options may be less restricted, but you should still ask before booking. The vehicle, internal flights and camp transfers determine what you can realistically carry. SafariFind's guide to getting around Tanzania by flights, roads and transfers can help you match your packing plan to the route.

Gear, health and document checklist

Keep your daypack simple. The useful items are the ones that protect you from sun, dust, insects and long hours in a vehicle.

• Binoculars, unless your operator confirms that they provide them.
• Camera, spare batteries, memory cards and a protective or dry bag.
• Power bank and the correct plug adapter for your devices. Check the current plug type and charging arrangements before departure.
• Headlamp or torch for walking around camp after dark.
• Reusable water bottle. Ask your lodge or guide whether the water provided is filtered or bottled before drinking it.
• Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and lip balm.
• Insect repellent and any prescribed medication in your hand luggage.
• Passport, visa or travel authorisation if required for your nationality, travel insurance details and copies of important documents. Confirm entry requirements with the official Tanzanian immigration or eVisa portal before travel.

Vaccine and other health requirements are not covered by the packing research used for this article. Check current advice with your doctor and an official government travel-health service before departure. Do not assume that a packing list answers an entry or vaccination question.

What not to bring to Tanzania

Leave military-style camouflage, very revealing public clothing and bulky hard luggage at home. Camouflage can be confused with military dress, while revealing clothing is particularly inappropriate outside beaches and resorts in Zanzibar.

• Camouflage or military-pattern clothing.
• Heavy denim as your main safari trouser option. It is less comfortable in heat and dust and dries slowly.
• Only short or sleeveless outfits. You need modest options for towns, villages and religious areas.
• Beachwear for general public use. Keep it at the beach, pool or resort.
• A hard suitcase if you are flying between camps, unless your operator confirms that it is accepted.
• More clothing than you can carry comfortably. Laundry may be available at camps and lodges, but confirm the arrangement before relying on it.

The supplied research does not give a plastic-bag rule or a confirmed list of restricted plastic items. Check the latest official Tanzanian entry and customs guidance before packing plastic bags or other potentially restricted items.
