The best time to visit is from November to April during the dry season. Temperatures remain warm during the day (around 28°C/83°F) and cool at night. This period offers optimal conditions for wildlife viewing, excellent visibility for game drives, and better road conditions for park access.
Akagera National Park is located approximately 110 kilometers (two hours' drive) east of Kigali in Rwanda's Eastern Province, on the Tanzanian border. The park is easily accessible from Kigali, making it convenient for visitors arriving at Kigali International Airport.
Akagera is home to diverse wildlife including over 100 African bush elephants, 80+ Rothschild giraffes, 15+ lions (reintroduced in 2015), 25+ black eastern rhinos, hippos, buffalo, and over 500 bird species. The park is Central Africa's largest protected wetland and Rwanda's last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species.
Main activities include wildlife game drives, boat cruises on Lake Ihema for water bird viewing, bird watching (500+ species), and community cultural experiences such as visiting dairy farms, honey cooperatives, and banana-beer makers. Revenue from cultural activities is shared with local community members.
Yes, permits are required before entering Rwanda's national parks. These should be obtained in advance. Self-drive access is available through the southern Mutumba Gate using 4×4 vehicles (recommended in wet season), or visitors can access the park via scheduled or charter helicopter services.
