Mashatu is nicknamed the 'Land of Giants' because it hosts the largest herds of elephants on privately owned land in Africa, along with majestic baobab trees and exceptional populations of large wildlife. Its unique landscape features riverine forests, sandstone ridges, and rocky kopjes reminiscent of Namibia, set at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers. The reserve shares unfenced borders with national parks in South Africa and Zimbabwe, creating a cross-boundary conservation area. As a privately owned reserve, it permits uncovered vehicle drives and off-road exploration for intimate wildlife viewing that isn't always possible in national parks.
Most visitors arrive via chartered flights from Johannesburg, South Africa (approximately 3-4 hours flight time). International travelers typically fly into OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg first. Safari operators offer fully inclusive packages that arrange all flights, transfers, and accommodation. While ground access from South Africa or Zimbabwe is technically possible via the Mapungubwe National Park area or Tuli Safari Area, these routes require extensive driving (8-10+ hours) and are rarely used. The remote location and private nature of the reserve mean access is best arranged through licensed safari operators.
The dry season from May to September is considered the best time, as animals concentrate around perennial rivers and water sources, providing exceptional sighting opportunities. December to February, despite extreme heat, offers excellent viewing of large herds of elephants, eland, zebras, and other ungulates. The reserve's semi-arid location makes it suitable year-round, though these periods provide the most predictable and rewarding wildlife encounters. Avoid the rainy season when wildlife disperses and roads may become challenging.
Mashatu is renowned for exceptional predator viewing including lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The reserve hosts the largest herds of elephants on privately owned African land, along with giraffes, eland, zebras, sable antelope, hyenas, and the elusive aardwolf. Over 350 bird species have been recorded. The reserve is also famous for its ancient Mashatu berry trees and majestic baobab trees. Daily sightings of major predators and large herbivores are common, particularly during the dry season.
While game drives in open 4x4 vehicles are the primary activity, Mashatu offers diverse experiences including guided walking safaris for intimate wildlife encounters, night drives to observe nocturnal animals, and cycling safaris. The reserve is particularly renowned for its photographic hides that allow photographers to get extremely close to wildlife without disturbing their natural behavior. Bird watching is excellent given the 350+ species present. All activities are conducted with qualified professional guides who are permitted to take guests off-road for unhindered wildlife sightings.
