Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla trekking permits cost $750 USD per person. This includes access to the park, a guided trek lasting approximately 2-8 hours, and the opportunity to spend one hour observing a mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat. The permit does not typically include accommodation, meals, or transportation to the park, which must be arranged separately through tour operators.

Gorilla trekking requires moderate to good physical fitness. Treks involve hiking through steep, muddy rainforest terrain at high altitude (1,900-2,400 meters elevation). The trek can last 2-8 hours depending on gorilla location. Visitors should be comfortable with uphill hiking, uneven ground, and prolonged walking. Those with heart, joint, or respiratory conditions should consult their doctor before attempting the trek.

Mountain gorillas can be seen year-round, but the best viewing conditions occur during the dry seasons: June to September and January to February. These months offer clearer weather, better visibility, and less muddy trails. However, gorilla sightings are not guaranteed any time of year. The park's misty climate and dense rainforest mean weather can change rapidly, so visitors should come prepared for wet conditions regardless of season.

Visitors are advised to consult their healthcare provider about vaccinations for yellow fever, typhoid, and malaria prophylaxis. Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended. Visitors must be free of respiratory illnesses (colds, flu, coughs) at least one week before trekking, as mountain gorillas are susceptible to human diseases. Hand sanitizer and basic first aid supplies are essential, and travelers should ensure they are in good health before attempting the trek.

Volcanoes National Park is home to approximately 480 mountain gorillas, representing roughly half of the world's remaining population. Mountain gorillas are classified as endangered but have shown population recovery due to intensive conservation efforts. The park was established in 1925 specifically to protect gorillas from poaching and remains Africa's oldest national park. Gorilla tourism revenue directly supports conservation and community development initiatives.
