The dry seasons (June-August and December-February) are ideal for general wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around water sources. However, the wet season (March-May and September-November) is excellent for bird watching, with over 315 species more active. The park is accessible year-round, making it flexible for various travel schedules.
The park is located 240 kilometers west of Kampala, approximately 3.5 hours by road via the Mbarara-Kampala highway. Main entry points are Sanga Gate and Nshara Gate with clear signposts. For air access, charter domestic flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi Airstrip to Mbarara Airstrip (1.5 hours), then transfer by road to the park.
Lake Mburo is home to impalas (found nowhere else in Uganda), approximately 1,500 giant eland antelopes, zebras, giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, leopards, and hyenas. The park hosts over 315 bird species, including the rare Shoebill stork, making it a premier birding destination in Uganda.
Lake Mburo is Uganda's smallest savanna park and the closest to Kampala, making it ideal for quick safari breaks. It is the only habitat for impalas in Uganda and offers unique horseback safaris. Despite its small size (370 km²), it provides unforgettable wildlife encounters with diverse acacia woodland and wetland habitats covering 20% of the park.
A minimum of 2-3 days is recommended to fully experience the park's wildlife and activities. This allows time for game drives, bird watching, and possibly horseback safaris. However, the park can be visited as a stopover for 1-2 days when traveling between Kampala and western Uganda's major safari destinations like Queen Elizabeth or Kigezi National Parks.
