Lake Natron's distinctive coloration comes from its extremely high alkalinity and salinity levels, making it one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. The water's chemical composition supports vast populations of tiny crustaceans and algae, which produce pigments that create the striking red and pink hues visible from certain angles and lighting conditions. This unique chemistry is what makes the lake an ideal breeding ground for lesser flamingos.
Swimming in Lake Natron is not recommended for most visitors. The lake's extremely high alkalinity and salt content can cause skin and eye irritation. The water can also be caustic to human skin upon prolonged exposure. Visitors should admire the lake from designated walking areas and avoid direct contact with the water. Always follow guidance from lodge staff and guides regarding safe distances and viewing locations.
December is the peak hatching season for lesser flamingo chicks at Lake Natron. Flamingos lay their eggs in September and October at the end of the dry season, and hatching reaches its peak in December. During this period, visitors can witness the remarkable sight of millions of grey chicks alongside adult flamingos, creating one of the largest and most dramatic flamingo breeding events on Earth and the only one in East Africa.
Lake Natron is approximately 200-250 kilometers from Arusha, requiring a 4-5 hour drive via 4x4 vehicle. Most visitors arrange transportation through safari operators or their lodge. Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha Airport are the nearest major airports. It is not recommended to attempt the journey independently due to remote terrain and road conditions. Pre-arranged transfers through accommodation providers are the standard and most reliable option.
Visitors must pay several fees to access Lake Natron and participate in activities: WMA (Wildlife Management Area) fees, village fees, and CBO (Community-Based Organization) fees. The entry fee is approximately $45 USD. For private visitors, lodges like Africa Safari Lake Natron can assist in arranging and submitting these payments. Travel agents must submit fees electronically through official channels. Exact costs may vary depending on specific activities and current regulations.
